I had a quick go on a Wisper 905se today.

Hi Nick

We will be sending both the XS and the 5OOW to the USA for tests with the LA Police, both bikes are 500W but the XS will be more expensive, it really depends on the LAPD's choice as to which one we will make available commercially.

Best regards David
Thanks David,

I'd be very interested in the results. One 500 W wheel vs two 250 W wheels will be an interesting trial. Is the 500 W front or rear? (Apologies if you have already answered that.)

BTW, there has been some interesting discussion on endless-sphere of the problems when a front hub motor locks up (for instance, through a controller failure). Its led me to think that only motors with freewheels should be used on front hubs. That in turn means that only rear hubs can be used for regen braking. Don't think its a issue for you with the Bafangs, but may be of interest.

Bafang

Hi Nick

I too am very interested in hearing the results, I will keep you posted.

You are correct, the Bafang motors we use have a high quality internal free wheel so the chances of them locking up is very remote. People do have to be wary though, there are a lot of motors being produced that look identical to Bafang A motors. Suzhou Yongyi Engineering Equipment co Ltd for instance make cheap motors for the Chinese market. Their motor is used on the counterfeit Wisper 905 (which thankfully seems to have died away now). These are nothing like the quality of the Bafang motors and even though the have a free wheel of sorts I have heard they can overheat and lock up quite easily.
