Like a kid in a candy shop I'm spoilt for choice at the moment when it comes to using an ebike as my mode of transport to commute to and from the shop here in Hampton Wick. Over the last 6-8 weeks I decided to use one of the bikes each time to see how they behave etc on the journey. if I'm honest it was my first time in many years that I'd used a bike to commute anywhere, I was actually very nervous to begin with as I drive a car regularly and I'm sure like others on here what with the recent media attention on cyclist being injured or killed it did play on my mind and made me a little nervous. The other thing I found a struggle was the 'gear' required to actually ride a bike. I also need to bring my 'office" with me to the shop, I managed to get a good deal on Swiss Gear back pack which enables me to pack, laptop, diary, notes, leads etc as I also run a publishing business and need to take the relevant 'tools' to work with me. The back pack is a little heavy even empty because of the protective padding for the laptop but it is comfortable on. I bought some really cool lights (Cat Eyes) from Sigma (what an amazing cycling shop!) next door that can be swapped easily to a different ebike that I choose to ride, they are small but very effective and look 'cool'.

I already had a Specialised helmet which at first I didn't use but it’s a must I think as I've had one near miss with a car pulling out on me.

So as its got colder I've added gloves, and then the eyes were streaming and so I looked at the glasses and would love a pair of Oakleys but at £200+ for the pair I saw just for riding I thought I’d source a cheaper pair and I am very happy with BBB yellow tint antiglare riding glasses at £15!
Next purchase I think would be a lighter (hi vis?) jacket but must be able to cope with the current climate! (any recommendations?) and may be some waterproofs (again any recommendations).

E-biking has been fun to and from work (16 mile round trip) and you do see things you are somehow missing in a car, there's the banter at the lights with other cyclists and just the general sense of achievement in reaching your destination knowing you didn't use the car etc. And when you've beaten the traffic which I often do at the moment what with Christmas shoppers coming in and out of Kingston I feel very smug knowing I’ve shaved 10-20minutes of my journey had I gone by car.

I’m using the Strava app on my iPhone which is great at monitoring my distance covered, speed etc, it’s really fun seeing my personal ‘bests’ on certain parts of my journey and times do vary depending on the day, time and bike etc.

As for the bikes, I’m smitten on the KTM range especially the new Macina Sport 400, Kudos’s Arriba and new Eiger with the Nuvinci hub, I think the Eiger pip’s the rest so far as the gearing is so smooth, just seems to suit the crank drive and makes changing gear effortlessly. Still have 30 odd other bikes to try and more coming in so the next few months may see me change my mind!:D

just curious - if you commute for the last 6-8 weeks, if you change bike each time (or each day), why do you still have 30 more to try? so, how many models have you ridden so far?

I've ridden all of the bikes I stock but only 8 models so far for commuting, I didn't say every day I said every time I decide to use an ebike as my mode of transport and I've used some models on more then one occasion. Does that satisfy your curiosity? ;)

yes, thanks Tom. That frames the report you wrote, 3 got your praises out of 8 tested.
Can you rank the ones you tested in order of preference? on comfort, range, power, equipment, suitability for commuting, value for money?

Ah I see, you want to know more about the bikes themselves, I'll do a little report on each one, its my opinion of course and what I may like on a bike others wont and vice versa, but Id be happy to share my experience etc.

you are in a unique situation, your views will be useful to members who want to get a bike for their commute.
For example, I want comfort, lightness, equipment and braking power. I'd select one model that will be among your top 3 in those categories.

I am sure LEBC will feed back but the KTM Macina Sport is very good has mudguards and decent pair of lights and only just over 2k, the weight is about the lowest I have seen with this quality of kit at 21kg. Alternatively best bike I have ridden value wise is AVE Ch Edition which is £1299 with alfine 8, terkro hydraulic disc brakes and B&M lights, have had a number of customers use this bike to commute on. The bike I commute on is KTM eTour which has Panasonic hub drive system it is not the lightest but the assist is very powerful plus it has plenty of gears (27) so you can pedal for longer down hill.

this is for kudosdave - want to sell more bikes? then beat the AVE Ch Edition and give customers standard two year guarantee.

In fairness it is a limited offer, 16 left with distributer at the moment. However any bike with the spec of this one would sell well. By conincedance I have just sold one today.

for Chinese bikes to compete with the likes of AVE, you need to do conversions in the UK because the mechanical bikes will have to come from Taiwan and the conversion kits from China. Frank's bikes are the only ones that can do this at present time.

Or this one. I think the guy must be buying the complete bikes from Mosso in Taiwan and probably converting with a standard kit from China:
2013 36V 350W 27-speed MOSSO-A Ebike with 36V 12AH Lithium Battery Electric Bike | eBay

That's one helluva spec for £850. Someone's got to get one to see if the motor's as good as the rest of the bike. Apart from those more expensive German conversions with Bafang CST motors that we saw about 6 months ago, this looks to be by far the best value ready-made non-European bike available at the moment. Hopefully Kudos and Woosh will have similar offerings next year, but could they match that price?

the guy lives in China, the address in Austria may be 'virtual' or a garage.
It's possible to buy just Mosso frames in China and add other components and electrics, that Mosso frame is about $200.
I doubt he has a proper export licence, whois record does not reveal who owns the website, I would not send him the money, too dodgy for me.
He said the price includes VAT, ask him for his EU VAT number, that'll clear up his identity.

website says Mosso-B, picture says Falcon
