Has anyone got any specific knowledge for the salisbury with regards to replacing the bottom bracket spindle?
Like I mentioned, the guy at Powacycle said that there was no choice. Does 67 x 152 sound like 'unused' dimensions for bracket spindles?
(When I'm sating bottom bracket spindle, I hope you get what I mean, basically all the stuff that goes in 'that bit' in your bike )

Did you read what I wrote in post #15?

The width of the frame should be 67mm accorrding to the size you've given. 67mm is the frame and 152mm is the length of the spindle which is very long. The question is: Why is it so long? Could you confirm the width of the frame bottom bracket to see if the frame is standard, and then look on either side of it and report what is on the spindle that adds to the width? Alternatively take a photo from underneath so that we can see what's there, but we still need the frame measurement.

The Sunlova bike had a very long BB spindle because it had a thick optical pedal sensor, which could be replaced by a normal thin one along with a new controller - then you could use a shorter spindle.

Apologies for not replying sooner...

I currently have a half-dead Salisbury in my front lobby. A chap from Powacycle sent me over a replacement spindle so once I get that thing in I'm going to try to tackle the electrics...

So many bloody tools needed for this stuff!

Thanks for all your help people... no doubt I'll be asking more questions when (not "if") I get stuck.

Thought I'd show you guys the state of the bearing cases that I just removed... Hope the image attachment works. I was riding on these a couple of weeks ago and they've had one year's worth of use.

Is that the spindle above the casings?
Looks as if there was never any grease in there.

Aye, that's the spindle...

I've got a big tub of grease on its way and I plan to apply liberally!

Looks as if the bearings rusted rather than failed through wear etc. Probably there was little grease in there to start and water got in. Try replacing with the one the dealer is offering, new bearings and plenty of grease.
Me, being tight fisted would try cleaning the old spindle up, if the pitting is only on the surface, you might get away with it.
