You can't beat a Stadium mirror as used on 1960's scooters. Mounted on a hollow stem, you get the view over you shoulder and see everything behind without taking your eyes off the road in front. I had the stem and the Stadium mirror was only £7 or £8.

That looks like a good idea, Colin. Can you still buy them, or the bits?

You can get the heads and fittings here:

or here:
Cambridge Lambretta

The stems they sell are solid steel, and although they look good they weigh a ton, which is why I use a hollow one. I also use two brackets on the stem to keep it stable. I found a BMX type bar-end which I slid inside the brake and throttle of the Wisper and that has a bracket to the stem as well as holding the bell and my dynamo flashing light. The stem also attaches to a bracket on the handlebar.

My wife has the type as described on her Synergie Breeze and she says it works fine for her but it sticks up and out more than the handle bar end type and unlike the bar end type it doesn`t fold in flat and to be honest it gets in the way in the bike shed and also when wheeling the bikes in and out of the pathway at the side of the house.

I don`t have any problems seeing behind using the blackburn bar end mirror and as I mentioned the plus is the way it folds in flat.

Each to his/her own

Low bridges are a problem at times, but one of the big advantages of the Wisper is the quick release handlebar adjustment - a quick flick and a pull on the bars and the mirror comes down and hits you on your shoulder.
Wind drag is only slightly more than a standard cycle mirror due to its larger size so no problem. The big plus is that with a slight movement of the head I can see myself in the mirror and remind myself just how devilishly handsome I am.

Colin

ps: the mirror is also positioned so that it does not stick out further than the bars - one of the many things that always put me off the bar end mirrors

I would LOVE to do without mirrors altogether, and just do the old glance over the right shoulder routine. Trouble is, for all sorts of reasons too boring to list, my right eye doesn't work!

So some sort of mirror is useful, although I do look at it with my left eye, I suppose - you don't have to turn your head, no more than you would in a car - your eye just swivels.

The fact that I don't have to move my head and I am always looking at the road in front is the main safety plus.
When I road motorbikes I used these mirrors on both sides giving a perfect view of everything behind without really having to look. The system fascinated many of the police bikes, especially in the Met area, most of whom insisted on borrowing the bike (an MZ250) to check it out for themselves.

Have you got enough gadgets on those handlebars?
Not really - I didn't have the Bicygnals lights and indicators slotted on. The front fit above the camera case and the rear fit on top of the top box.

You handsome brute you:D :D
Yes, but I can't really compete with my Wisper for that rugged, yet suave look. He tends to get more admiring looks than me. (A lot more, in fact)
