Many bikes don't have a split link, the chain is just joined to be continuous.

If your bike has derailleur gears, get the right type for it. They are usually named by the number of gears, e.g. 7/8 speed chain for example.

Basically up to 8 derailleur gears use 3/32" chain, 9 or 10 speed use a special narrower chain.

Bikes with hub gears normally use 1/8" chain.

The 3/32" and 1/8" are the width of the chain rollers between the inner plates of the chain links.

You can use a joining link or join a new chain using a chain tool, from any good bike shop. This web link shows how to use a chain tool.

I snapped mine. Made the mistake of not cycling at Christmas and not cleaning and oiling before I neglected it for 2 weeks! ..Got a new one with one of those magic links - really easy to fit. Cost about 15 quid.
