Hi

My crank is getting very lose on my kudos king, they did tighten it at the shop
when I had it for a few weeks but its now getting to the state I think i should
replace it, it is still under warranty but think I should put a better type in if I can.

My question is what tools do I need and what should I replace the crank hub with.

Never done one of these before so any help is most welcome, not sure whats in there so not sure what video to watch on you-tube, do they all remove the same way or are the different. don't want to knacker the threads on the frame.

Thanks.

It is not clear to me whether the shop you took it too tighten it at your request, or the bike shop had carried out maintenance on the bike, if they had done so they should be held accountable for it.

But new bikes do need to have a service to adjust and tighten nuts and bolts after a 100 miles or so,it seems likely that if it is loose then you will need to replace it , once crank arms work loose they rapidly fail if not done up tight again soon after you notice .

You will need a crank extractor tool to sort this out, remove the cap on the crank arm, some have an allen key bolt, some have a nut on a spindle, screw in the extractor tool fully ,with appropriate size spanner screw in the tool untill it pushes the crank off clean of any dirt or grease you find on the axle, check the taper of the crank arm if this looks worn ,junk it and get a new one ,because it will not stay tight how ever much you do it up.

Fit crank back on axle, tighten up with the socket part of the tool extractor (or the allen key bolt if fitted),slacken the nut or bolt then with a mallet or piece of wood and hammer , sharp blow over the crank above the tapered hole, then do up the nut/bolt tight.

thats my way of doing it ,there may be others.

The reason to hammer the crank is make sure it is home and tight ,specially after doing the fixing up

Thanks for the reply. I have ordered a tool for removing the pedals.. I think. LOL and will have to get the crank removal tool as well once i know what I need.

The bike went back because of a few faults, this was just something that I had noticed and asked him
to tighten. I couldn't move it when I went to collect it so just though he had fixed it. Still
its the only job I haven't done on a bike yet.

Thanks again

When you get the crank off, it's best to clean the square taper shaft and hole with something that gets rid of grease before reassembly.

Ok thanks for the tip, I am replacing with sealed unit, so I take it I am only cleaning the frame
threads and such before replacing the unit./

Am I reading this aright?

Are you just taking the cranks orf & leaving the bottom bracket in situ, or are you replacing the bottom bracket?

If the latter, you'll need a bb tool too.

I am replacing the bottom bracket, I understand I need a tool for that but I dont know if there are several types, or just one type, so was leaving it until I had removed the cranks, before going to get the bb removal tool.

without knowing the full SP there is no reason to change the sealed unit?, just the crank should suffice, normally the crank tapers wear and are not reusable after that.

changing the sealed unit is a more involved job, knowledge of LH & RH threads in the B Bkt shell.

If the sealed unit is at fault that should be covered by warranty, No disrespect to Kudos Dave, his aftermarket help is very good!

Just ask Dave ?

Dave has already come forward and has offered to replace the unit.
It was never about claiming on the warranty, its just as easy to go buy one. I could have claimed
for other things that have gone wrong but sometimes I just choose to go buy and replace.

Thanks for the help though that's always very welcome.
