Just bought one of those cheap torch style Cree Ultrafire front lights from Ebay and shipped from the far east.

It takes 3 x 1.5V AAA batteries and what a hell of a good little light !!

Powerful, well made, cheap, can focus it...need I go one. I think it was mentioned in a light thread about a month ago

I have tried many of these lights, most seem to fall to bits or the LEDS fail after a while,( lucky, I'd get the piano in a marching band) I purchased one of the upto 80v lights that Dave found, hard wired it to battery, its a moped light I think. Cost £4.00. Worth checking out if you get any problems.
I hope your light stays working for you.

Would it light up a pitch black country lanes as a backup light?
Any chance of a link to it, my search finds loads of different models?
Also did it deliver with a 3xAAA battery holder?

You Get the 1000 lumen Cree LED and darkness "what darkness!!"it will light up anything but you need the 18650 battery pack or AAAs will last about 30 mins !!!! on full power.I use the 5000 lumen double headlight and believe me it bright and I think brighter than a car light ?? and with the 18650 battery pack it will last about an hour on full power.

You can get a couple of 18650s and a charger for less than a pack of AAA cells. One 18650 replaces your triple AAA cartridge.

I thought those 18650 cells needed monitoring, or are they specially made ones for torches?

Don't really know about monitoring them I've used them for years with no problem and have broken down some packs of 4 and used them singularly in torches and whatever with no probs I just recharge them and away they go again.

You need the protected ones. They have a little PCB under the cap. The charger will only charge 18650s if they are above 2.5v, so if you use unprotected ones and run them down too far, you're out.
