I have only been back into regular biking since I retired two years ago . Previously , I had always used three speed equiped bikes , so I am new to derailleur equipped machines . I replaced the chain on my pedal bike about 3 months ago . It came with a type of joining link that was new to me . To fit this link , you insert it through the chain ends , and then the separate side plate is pressed into position with a click and the job is done. you have to sort of bend the chain sideways to fit this last part . The problem is , I would now like to split the chain to clean and lube it . Can someone tell me how you get it off , or is it a case of a one shot device and I now have to use a chain splitter ?

I've had similar problems in the past but with the latest SRAM chain that I fitted the golden or magic links work fine. If you can't get yours out then you'll have to use the chain splitter. You could get your LBS to supply what they recommend and get them to demonstrate. I'll do a little video demo for you tomorrow.
