looks like it would be ok until you cycled into the back of the truck parked in front of you

OK on a dark lane, but in a well lit area or with car dipped headlights on the road surface, I doubt it would show up well enough. Unfortunately it's in those heavy traffic areas where potholes often occur.

Doesn't look to be projecting far in front of the bike - As Gouluk implies, if you were concentrating on that grid, you'd soon be wearing someone's rear number plate!
