Making a torque throttle instead of a speed throttle for a cheap controller

All you need is a small potentiometer on the throttle signal wire. Connect one side to the signal wire coming from the throttle, the other side to ground and the wiper to the controller. A 10k one should work. If you install it at the controller end, nobody will know it's there. You will able to set the maximum speed at whatever you want less than what you already have, as it will only adjust downwards.

You can also make a 6km/hr start up button with one. One side goes to ground, the other side to the red 5v wire via a push button switch, and the wiper goes to the controller as the throttle signal. You can then adjust the potentiometer to set the speed the bike goes when you push the button. I made a cruise control like that before we had decent controllers. I had the potentiometer on my handlebars. I used a three-pole switch to switch from normal throttle to the potentiometer one for cruise. Post #2 here 13 years ago!
Hi @saneagle
Hmm, I fancy the legal low speed throttle arrangement for bbs01b. I find the throttle useful. I was thinking about going the DVLA low speed moped route but this is cheaper and neater, still legal to ride bridleways and footpaths.

I've ordered the trimpot and a 3 pin extension cable to make up an insertable kit for the throttle cable. I think I understand your description but could you draw a wiring diagram showing trimpot inserted into a cut 3 wire cable pretty please.

If anyone else wants a trimpot smallest order is 10, cheap as chips, so I'll have one spare for me, the rest I can't use.
Happy to share via 2nd class post , they won't arrive from China for a couple of weeks though. Pm me.

once you have the pots set to the levels desired remember its a high impact environment mounted on a bike.. a dollop of hot glue, silicone ,or your temp adhesive of choice will stop settings straying due to incidental knocks vibrations etc..
If tacked pots dont waver over time you could consider potting to protect against the environment completely.

Thanks, I have a small bum bag on my headstock all the excess wires and connectors live in, I'll probably tape it inside a small ziplock bag initially so it can't short out etc.
The switched fused live feed and wago connectors for lights and phone charger live in there too. The money pocket holds a couple of spare fuses, data connector for speeed phone app etc. it's a neat arrangement.

Wiring diagram is shown in post #52 exactly as you want it if you want to make the module removable, otherwise ignore the connectors.

If you were devious, you could put a reed switch on extension wires across the two pins with green wires, and stick a magnet in the thumb of your glove, like I showed in this thread except the wiring is simple - just a simple NO reed switch with one wire from each end going to the two pins with the green wires:
