Firstly i must thank all of you who steered me away from buying polyurethane solid tyres ;)
I went for the tyre of choice, the Schwalbe Marathon Plus for both front and rear. Got 2 for £39.99 with free post off eBay, which i thought was good value.
£29.99 each in Halfords
What surprised me the most is how discreet the puncture resistant features are on this tyre. I was expecting it to be heavy with big thick layers of rubber.
I had to keep checking the markings on the side thinking they must have sent me the wrong ones.
Only time will tell if these work as advertised, but my first impressions have inspired confidence that this is a good quality tyre.

my last bike had these for over 12 months without incidence...and many on here share similar experiences. hopefully technology will develop and a puncture proof tyre will become available, I will be at the front of the queue ;)

It struck me what a great big thick layer of armour there was on them - and I thought no wonder they don't puncture easily, so I'm surprised you think they are discreetly puncture proofed.

I've had mine on for 3 months now and no puncture. Previously, with Continentals, I'd get a puncture every 2 weeks or so. The MPs can only be puncture resistant, though!

I went out on my non-electric non MP bike last week......and got a puncture on a 2 mile ride to the shops :(

Maybe discreetly was the wrong word to use. I was trying to convey that if i didn't know these were puncture proof tyres, then they don't massively standout as being so. I was expecting a 1cm think wedge of rubber to cope with the length of a nail, tack or large shard of glass.

Yes, they can't cope with a very long nail or thorn, but they work because the inner liner material is resistive and tends to eject anything trying to penetrate it.

In my own case I've now reached six years of MP tyres with just one puncture, and that one through my own silliness in thinking I could ride over a pile of cut blackthorn with impunity. Of course it punctured one tyre, but even then it was slow enough to be able to ride the 7 miles home on one pump-up, repairing the puncture at leisure once home.

I think the Schwalbe technology is pretty amazing, every year they improve on the puncture resistance yet make the tyres lighter and lighter, hats off to em.
