We've a new folder in our line-up, delivered to us this week by Freego. It's a replacement for the Izip Via Mezza Enlightened, which despite being really quite good, was withdrawn by the Izip importer and replaced by something that looked similar but lacked the guts of its predecessor - 200W motor, no throttle and a rudimentary pedelec system.

So... we're pleased to have taken on the Freego. It has a 250W Bafang motor, 37V 10Ah Lithium ion battery pack as standard (with the option of upgrading to a whopping 17.5Ah battery pack), 6-speed Shimano gears, built-in lights, front fork suspension and lots of GO.

It's not as sophisticated or polished as a Kalkhoff by any means, but it is effective and scampers up the hills like a good 'un. I think you could expect a good 20 miles on throttle alone with the standard battery. Well worth a try. It's in our London shop now (and there'll be one at our Loughborough showroom next week too).

I tried all the Freego models a couple of weeks ago after reading some great reviews on here, but it was really a folder we were looking for and this one hit the spot for me. I've written some riding notes on our new London Electric Bikes Blog (there are also notes for the Oxygen Emate and Sahel Pro Disc there)

Freego Electric Folding Bike £999 for the 10Ah version. Limited availability on the 17.5Ah version, but we're doing that for £1299.

I would be interested to hear what other members think is currently the best folding electric bike on the market. We have a long history with folders, going back to our first bikes, the Honda Step Compo and Panasonic WiLL Bike in 2003 and 2004, then the redoubtable little Quando. Always looking for more good folders at 50cycles.

Simple, a Brompton with a narrow width Tongxin on the front and controller/battery seperate in the front bag.

Lightest, most portable folder available IMHO.

But then I am biased :p

I am holiday'ing with my wife in hilly coastal areas with my home-made e-Brompton and her iZip Via Mezza Enlightened (both 36V 250W 10Ah Li-Ion folding bikes).

The iZip is not very progressive (crude, sudden acceleration with both throttle and pedal sensor) but offers the necessary punch to tackle the inclines (rear wheel drive, by the way). It is more stable on its 20" wheels than the Brompton, and it looks good (according to its rider). The simple grip-twist shimano gears do the job, and the front disc brake works well. The rear rack is useful, but we miss the front+rear capacity of the Brompton.

The e-Brompton delivers fantastically smooth acceleration, it's flexible (3-mode power level selector) and it provides extra torque and high-end speed (it's equipped with the more refined Suzhou Bafang 8-Fun hub motor). It is front-wheel drive though, so riding on gravel/sand can lead to involuntary understeer. ;)

To be honest, everything about the Brompton is better (folded size, ride quality, gears, luggage, electrics / controls, etc.)....but then I am very biased :D
