Hi everyone, I’ve just today taken delivery of a brand new e-bike for my 50th birthday and was very excited. The dealership set it up and delivered it to me and briefly ran through the functions. I’ve been out riding this afternoon and I must say I’m very disappointed. I can hear the motor is on but I can’t feel any difference at all between eco, tour, sport, turbo. I climbed a very small hill and didnt feel hardly any assist at all, no matter which gear I used and which mode I used either. Is this normal? Am I doing something wrong or maybe it’s not set up correctly. I test rode several bikes and I am sure I remember more power assist than this but If this is normal I don’t really feel that this is the bike for me as it’s not helping me much at all. And I wouldnt fancy doing any hilly rides.

There is also a lever on the left handlebar - when pressed I can hear a noise but I can’t feel what it actually does and there nothing in the manual to explain this.

can anyone help or give advice before I return the bike.

Thanks so much in advance.

Before anything, lift each wheel off the ground and spin it by hand to check that they both spin freely.

Your bike's motor controller uses speed control, so each level on the LCD gives the same power up to a different speed. Let's say that level 1 has a speed limit of 8 mph and level 2 has 10 mph. If you start to pedal on level 1, you get maximum power that will bring you quickly up to 8 mph, then the power will cut, so you'd be pedalling without assistance at anything above that. If you then change to level 2, the bike will accelerate again until 10 mph, then the motor will cut in and out while it maintains that speed, and if you try to pedal any faster, 100% of the power will have to come from you. If on the other hand, you start on level 5, the pike should take you all the way to 15mph before the power cuts.

The bike is fairly powerful, so if you just leave it on level 5, it will always give you maximum power up to 15 mph as long as you're pedalling. Try that and report back what you find.

Is the connector disconnected along the inside of the chain stay? It connects the battery power to the motor. We have 2 wayfarers and even in eco mode they pick up speed well taking us to 15.5mph, the higher modes are even more impressive

Can I just check that you are turning on the battery by pressing the blue button on the battery itself. Then pressing the orange button on the top of the controller, then toggling the power modes by pressing up on the control into eco, sport, turbo etc.

Be very careful with the Wisper bikes; my battery caught fire, and I just uploaded the video yesterday. Wisper have just kept ignoring me about this.

Thanks Peter,

These batteries were a part of a group of about 100 batteries built about 7 years ago. They have been subject to two recalls through dealers and directly where people registered their bike with us. A cable was routed over the top of the battery and over time wears through and can short on a cell. There maybe a few still not accounted for although we thought we had caught them all. If anyone has a Wisper battery with the specific logo as seen in the video please email support@wisperbikes.com quoting the serial number found on the base. We will happily replace the battery if it is one of these.

incidentally we have not received any correspondence from this man

All the best, David

Good morning Brian,

I have responded twice to your You Tube video both times my responses seem to have been taken down?

It is very easy to contact us but as you seem to be having problems please email me directly at david@wisperbikes.com, this morning we have had a thorough search through spam and email accounts and cannot find any correspondence from you.

I have also asked you to call me on PM? Just in case you missed it my number is 07733226906, I’m a very friendly person so really don’t worry about calling me.

These batteries have been recalled twice and reported by us to Trading Standards about 6 years ago.

To put Wisper owners minds at rest this problem affected a very small production of batteries about 7 years ago. Through our thorough recall efforts we took nearly all of them out of the market and replaced them free of charge. They are not all accounted for. we believe there are still 9 out there somewhere. This was a problem on a specific 375Wh traditional Wisper battery. We have never had any kind of incident with any other battery, including 575Wh, 700Wh and 750Wh traditional bike batteries and all Wayfarer and Tailwind batteries.

Any questions please pm or email me.

All the best, David

I should also add..,

This battery has not caught fire. The cells are still intact. The BMS has done its job. This is not a lithium fire. It is severe overheating caused by a short in the charging area. There is a fuse in the charger that would normally blow before any such damage occurred. I question whether a non approved charger has been used? Thus far I have not been able to contact the poster to discuss. The reason I’m questioning whether the correct charger has been used, is it’s very strange that the battery has behaved perfectly for 6 years being used twice a week and only now is there a problem.

All the best, David

Thanks Chris, it's so annoying that these guys will post something so potentially damaging but will not get in touch directly.

Fortunately we know about these batteries, have reported them to Trading Standards and have had two recalls on them. We now have nearly all of them back and have exchanged them.

All the best, David

Thanks, he has blocked me from commenting any more! What is wrong with these people?

What I am trying to tell people is not to worry.

It's my opinion that he has used a charger that's not from us and does not want to tell anyone.

I really dont mind people making negative comments but think it's more than cowardly not giving a supplier the opportunity to respond or ask questions.

All the best, David
