Morning all,

Just thought I'd introduce myself as I have recently joined.

I currently have a Wisper 806se which I've had for the last week or so, currently enjoying it apart from the nasty UK law that is 15.5mph.
As the bike is a 20" wheel with 7 cassette gears, I personally find it fairly easy to pedal the bike without assistance at about 15mph.

Does anyone else have this same scenario?

Cheers
Dan

Hi there and welcome to the forum,

I have had that issue myself before but not with the same bike if i am honest, i am not 100% sure why there is a limit on the speed of an e-bike that means you cant do more than 15.5 MPH as there are plenty of other cyclists out there who do way more than that on their own power alone, all the e-bike does is help you along to the speed you want to do, but rules are rules and i am sure they have good reason so best off sticking by them. I know that 20 inch wheels accelerate faster than say the 26 inch wheels i have so i can imagine you get up to speed fairly quickly too.

It is ridiculous! I mean I had it downhill and maxed out the pedaling to which according to the speedo I was doing a smidgen over 25mph which was obviously powered by me and gravity.

As you say, most people can easily obtain 15mph powering themselves so kind off negates the need for electro-assistance..

I wonder if there is a way to remove said speed limiter as it feels like my bike wants to go quicker but the motor turns off after 15.5mph.
I'm not asking for 30mph plus.. just a nice 20mph or so should sort it.

No, because they've all derestricted them via the secret settings.
Interesting.. I have played around with telling the speedo that I have 16" wheels and running a 48V battery.. now although the speedo read incorrectly, I verified by GPS that I was inbetween 15-16mph.

Now.. are you hinting that there is a "Secret - Secret" menu?

I'd love to tell you, but I'd have to kill you afterwards to stop the secret from getting out and I don't want to go to jail in case the soap falls on the floor in the shower.

Hi Dan, firstly thanks for investing in a Wisper. The 806se is one of our most popular bikes.

Re speed, unfortunately it's the law. We all think it's crazy and nonsensical but I cant see it changing. My advice would be to keep the bike in level 1 and only use the rest of the power when hill climbing.

All the best, David

Hi Dan,
Could you put a bigger chain ring on the front? Assist will still drop out at the same speed, but it sounds like you're a strong cyclist and at least this would keep you soinning above 25mph.

Thanks David, I get that law is the law - just seems very disappointing to be hitting a limiter so quickly.
I suppose for uphill jaunts it would be great but my main journey is mostly flat so assistance isn't really needed.

Gotta be a loophole somewhere

I suppose like road speed limits you can eke out 10% to 17mph.
Or be totally legal and register an S - Pedelec other wise just ride a bike unrestricted with out being silly.

So much want!

Nealh.. most speed laws for motor vehicles on the road are governed by 10% +2 so will be 19MPH before you're potentially "breaking the law"

As said though, if riding through a busy city centre at 25+ that's stupid, but on an empty NSL road, it's probably better to limit your chances of being rear ended by a car because you were going a lot slower than them.

Most speed laws may be 10% + 2 but not many will get away with it. Try doing 35 in a 30 or 46 in a 40, the filth will nick you if seen doing so and speed cameras that are working will taka a nice pic of you.
