Hi all,

Earlier today i was browsing through the Gum Tree website and came across quite a few second hand electric bikes for sale, some names of which i had never seen or heard of before. But then again remember that i am still wet behind the ears.
Some prices were as low as £250 (ono) and in good nick too,so if you are interested to buy cheap or even to buy as spares maybe that is the place to be "Gum Tree".

I have just bought an off road touring ike, a Salsa Fargo on eBay. Two days later the exact same bike, same pics was advertised on Gumtree for half the price. It seemed to me my ebay seller had no gain to do that so the Gumtree advert was probably a clone fraudulent advert.

I sent an enquiry and later the same day had a reply from Gumtree themselves warning me not to deal with the Gumtree seller, it was fraudulent.

We have advertised some models on there including a pre-owned normal bike (took in part exchange) and Mezzo D9 folding bike. Worked well for us with the former model sold to someone local and someone came from London to buy the Mezzo. Initially when we started we sold folding bikes and electric bikes.

However you did need to be careful if buying privately. For us the adverts cost nothing and there were no paypal/selling fees.

Do you mean buying from Gum Tree privately or in general?
Thanks for the advice anyway my friend.

If the gumtree advertiser is a shop you have some comeback. But you need to be careful if buying privately and in general as you do not have the back of eBay's protection process. Common sense normally prevails here e.g. do not pay until you have the bike etc. For us gumtree works well as we are not charged and people can visit us/and or know our full address details/contact details.

The other thing to be wary of is battery quality, we have a proper battery tester which discharges a fully charged battery thus giving us a capacity percentage.

I buy and sell quite a lot on Gumtree.

I use it as a first choice with eBay second. I like the fact you may view before you buy, you are keeping your business local and no fees or postage costs/hassle. Jut deal in cash, in person

Having said that I would never buy an ebike , laptop or iPad off there. Just too many scammers

I just use common sense and, touch wood, never been scammed.

However, rounds these parts (Sussex) there are rarely ebikes on there and they are usually way overpriced and/or ancient SLA sakuras. The owners tend not to appreciate how the market has moved on and their 3 year old bike with original battery is not worth £700

That's good to know, how does this tester work, does it drain the battery at a fast or slow rate?
