Panasonic have confirmed their new crank drive unit is to be launched, and it's possibly the smallest yet for a sophisticated system. The link below has some limited information, ignore the way it mistakenly refers to direct drive:

It still has the battery behind the seat tube, i don't see why when the battery is so small. The long wheelbase ebikes feel so slow to steer, their length also means to put them on a car rack (mine at least) you have to remove a wheel or they protrude on each side.

Tastes differ, I prefer the compact all-in-one assembly, more waterproof. In fact when I had a Panasonic equipped e-bike and an unpowered Trek road bike the length difference was only 1.3 inches. Much of the extra length moaned about can be imaginary from visual impressions, since the bike designers often change the down tube and seat tube angles and displace other frame elements to compensate for the battery inclusion.

the Bosch looks smart - the Panasonic looks like it's pregnant..

And the new Bosch looks like this (I'd buy one if I had the money):

'tis nice looking, but I'm reserving judgment until I know how gearing up the pedal effort 1 to 2 or more affects the cycling efficiency. It also limits the chainwheel options.

the Bosch small front chain ring looks like a good idea, reducing strain on the chain, assuming it has some kind of gearbox to keep unpowered cycling normal. Can't wait to try one.
