I tried the spd clips and had trouble in the busy city can be a bit Anarchic in Amsterdam, but the main
problem was a bad knee pain that started after 50km by 70 it was too much had to stop with them fast.

I also use Shimano SPds with a flat pedal on the other side. Usually I ride in Shimano Mtb boots as they are also good hiking boots in the summer. You can adjust the tension on the cleats so it is easy to unclip. I prefer to ride in SPDs because it keeps your feet in one place and does not let them slip.

Hi all

One of my factory pedals has gone on my Ave MTB - the bearings are squeaky and occasionally seize - so I think it's time to swap. Only done ~1,500 miles over five months, but they do look rubbish (oi, Ave, cheap K218 pedals are for cheap bikes!). I believe I need 9/16" threaded pedals.

I wonder if I can therefore resuscitate this thread to get some advice on pedals, and possibly straps too. I don't have cycling shoes and am presently disinclined to get a pair - I did once get some Specialized shoes and the soles wore holes far too quickly, and tbh I'm not sure if cleats are for me anyway. I'm 90% on busy A/B roads and need to put my feet down quickly.

I think however I might be willing to give straps a go on flat pedals - if they don't work out the pedals will still work fine! Anyone had any luck with them? I like the look of these pedals but they are marked as "track" - why would they not be suitable for road? The platform does look a bit small, but the description doesn't mention cleats.

It looks like one can buy straps separately but it's not clear how they attach to the pedal, or what pedals they would fit.

I learn from the mighty Wikipedia that "the threading size [of pedals] is often stamped into the crank, near the pedal hole". I've taken a look, and oddly my crank arms are marked differently: right is labelled "17 12", and left is "16 12". Shouldn't these be the same?

Any help appreciated!
