I've had scary moments on my rear hub brake. Bike shop fixed my rear brake cable. As I was riding out of the shop I pulled the lever gently and the wheel locked up straight away. It happened several times more on the short trip home. I loosened it a bit. The next day I was on the way back from town and someone stepped out in the path of the cyclist in front of me. He braked hard, and I did too and there was an awful noise and the back end was sliding like crazy.
Then after that it settled down, but every time it was wet or cold the brake would grab harshly on the first couple of applications. Now it doesn't work at all!
