Hi Everyone,

Just had my 3.2 yr old Agattu serviced (new chain, brake cables and blocks, marathon tyres fitted, de greased and reoiled etc etc) But have noticed a strange noise like rapid machine gun fire or helicpoter rotor blades coming from the motor or somewhere under or around the pedels. The sound kicks in when I am pedelling uphill with the motor on. The steeper the hill- and subsequent higher the stress on the motor-, the louder the noise. It is so loud that it rattles the frame and turns heads as I pass.
The bike shop mechanic double checked chain and gogs etc but couldn't work it out.

It sounds quite serious. What could it be?

It sounds like the 9 tooth motor sprocket may be jumping teeth on the chain. New chains on old sprockets often cause trouble, but the sprocket is reversible as a short term fix if tooth wear is apparent.

There's a page on my Panasonic unit support site has several links to these transmission problems with the correct idler adjustment shown:

Maintenance

One of the links details replacing the motor drive sprocket and the reversal tip.

Thanks Flecc,
You've probably hit the nail on the head (or the chain on the sprocket!).

I'll take it back to the bike shop and show them your advice /instructions page.

Glad to hear that your "repair" is better than the bike's one Tom. Just in time for the nicer weather. :)
