Powacycle Salisbury Problem

Hi, Power keeps cutting out on Powacycle Salisbury, I suspect brake lever switches are sticking, is there any simple maintenance that I can do, to correct this, or are the switches un-servicable ?.....Del.

My Salisbury does regularly 'drop out' power for a few seconds (due to the BMS, I assume) but this is rarely a significant problem. However, if more than a couple of times per trip - yes, I guess you may be looking at a mechanical issue with the brake power shut-off.

Hi, Hannibal, thanks for reply, it's probably normal then, only does it every so often, just seen your post on battery dying, I did toy with idea of getting a second battery, but the cost put me off the idea, I bought my Salisbury second hand, and am not sure how old it is, it had ''hardly been used'' hope battery lasts as long as yours.............Del.

It's not normal for a bike to cut out. Why do you suspect the brake switches?

If you're an ex-motorcyclist and ride with your fingers on the brake, then you have to stop that.

The lever holds the switch off in its home position, so when you move the lever, it allows the button to spring out and switch on to cut the motor. If it turns out that your switches are too sensitive, you could epoxy a thin piece of something on to the lever to hold the switch further down. To disassemble the lever, you need to remove a small circlip on the pivot pin (don't lose it), and then the pin slides out, and note how the spring goes before you get the pin all the way out.

If you find that the switch is just faulty, you can disconnect the offending one at the controller (unless you have two into one connector) or just cut the wire. You can test if the problem is a brake switch by temporarily disconnecting them at the controller.

A chafed brake wire can also cause the problem. If the two bare wires touch, that's the same as switched on so you get cut-out.

d8veh, thanks for that, I suspect brake switches because when it happens, everything is dead, a couple of times, after it has happened, I have applied brakes, released them, and off it goes again,, just wondered if switches were prone to sticking ?.........Del.

I think it's more likely your brake cable sticking than the switch because if the switch sticks, it'll be off. It's possible for the switch to become over-sensitive if the end wears. You can test that by seeing at what point of lever movement it cutsthe motor, by lifting the motor wheel off the ground and testing it. If the motor cuts as soon as the lever moves then something needs to be changed.

Thanks d8veh, work and back today, about 5 miles, didn't do it once, fitting new brake blocks at week-end, so will give cables a look at, and a squirt of oil, thanks again........Del.

d8veh, You were right, today decided to put new brake blocks on front, no problem, thought while doing it, would adjust back brakes, discovered back brake cable seized up, hardly any movement in it at all, just enough to allow brakes to work, couldn't get inner cable out, so complete cable replacement tomorrow............Del.
