Problems with Powabyke Shopper

Might someone be able to advise on a puzzling problem with a s/h Powabyke Shopper that was bought as a non-runner.

There is 39v+ at battery terminals and the three throttle neons light up when key turned. But when turned off and throttle held open whilst turned back on, all three lights just illuminate permanently again - no diagnostic routine possible.

Diagnostic instructions say change throttle if this happens. Have done just that, but new throttle makes no difference.

Have also checked wiring continuity from throttle connector terminal alongside front fork to other end at controller as well as all the other controller wires.

Any suggestions other than change the controller ? - obviously loth to spend even more money unnecessarily.

Hi Bubbles, did you just change the throttle, or did you change the extension cable from the throttle to the PCB? It is possible that there is a break in the internal cables causing the bike not to work. Also check for any signs of corrosion on the 6 pin plug between the throttle and extension cable and make sure every pin is pushed to the end of the black 6 pin plug.

Let me know how you get on.

Shopper problem

Many thanks indeed for the prompt reply, Frank.

Yes, have checked that cable and there's continuity both ends on all pins and also applied wd40 to connectors.

Things no different, I'm afraid.

Very frustrating it is !!

I think the powabyke has a switch on the handelbar which which switches from power to pedal assist....if you are static testing the bike you need to make sure it is in power mode.

try to eliminate the other components that could cause the bike not to run

motor...attach a battery direct to the motor + - you can use a 12 volt battery or the bikes 36 volt battery (12 volt will run but very slow) if motor does not run that is your problem

brake cut offs... each brake lever has a micro switch to turn off the power when the brake is applied...check they are working ok

if this does not help guess you are looking at a new controller

The switch on the handle bar would not effect the diagnostics on the bike, neither do the brake cut off (there is only only on the left hand lever). I'm still thinking there is something within the throttle that is not quite right. Can you confirm the NEW throttle was purchased from a Powabyke dealer who sourced it from Powabyke? All Im thinking is another electric bike throttle will work differently from a Powabyke throttle. Can you confirm what happens if you just turn the bike on WITHOUT twisting the throttle?

Hi Bubbles, is the throttle a full length grip throttle, or is it just a grip shift style (thumb and index finger twist)?

Hi again Frank

It was a new throttle, bought from Mail Order Cycles, Ipswich - the old one has Powabyke printed on it but the new one says 'Elite' instead.

There are moulded patent and part numbers though, on the flat end where the allen key is and these are identical on both.

Hope this helps

Ok Bubbles, that's what I think it is then. None of our throttles have Elite written in them so I'm thinking it is either faulty or the wrong one.

Just to confirm, your throttle is a full twist throttle with H M L written on the lights?

Yes, Frank, the whole of the 'handle' beside the neons H M and L twists around 45 degrees anticlockwise, and other than the printed name they are absolutely identical, down to wiring codes etc (save that the 'new' one has hotmelt glue around the connector terminal incoming wires.

Hi again Frank

Out on a limb in West Cumbria I'm afraid, but have already spoken with your dealer in Grange over Sands and they were exceedingly helpful
