how about a small trailer attached to the seat post, something like this one
Children Bike Trailer | eBay
The only thing with trailers is they can sometimes be inconvenient/impossible to get through gates on cycle paths for instance.

@anniegirl......I think with certain styles of bikes wicker looks really nice....its becoming quite fashionable you know ;)

Try having a look on american ebay as they have lots more innovative pet accessories there than here.
I got my folding pen for when I am camping from an american company and also a double dog pushchair  which held 6 of my dogs....before they were available here.......I didnt use it much....honest lol

I have definitely seen many more different dog carriers and will try to find some more examples for you, 5kgs is not far from the safe limit to carry on a front basket, you can take bigger dogs if you use your rear rack.

I modified a dog travel box for use by some of mine on my rear rack a few years ago, but to be honest they arent fussed now, they prefer to sleep in the van and await my return ......lazy bugs......

Lynda :)

Relax, this is obviously an Aprils Fool joke! ;-)
No-one would take a dog in an open basket at 32mph, surely?
V.good had us all going there, specially the bit about "smooching" ! (which smiley appropriate?)
Err, You do realize any people can read this? Mmm!

Don't forget he had his wind deflector on the front!
I bet he loved it at 32mph, besides you see dogs half hanging out car windows at 70 on the motorway!

Lynda - glad you like the doggy bag! I can bring one to redbridge if you want to see one.. You may have to provide a dog to demonstrate though.. :)

Regards
Martin

Well Martin , seeing as Redbridge is the start of my 3 month tour of Europe in the motorhome I will have a choice of 4 Pomeranians with me if you need to borrow one to model it for the general public :D :D

I'm glad I have seen this posting, because I was going to get a similar front basket to carry my pooch in......so back to the drawing board if these are not very safe. I've looked at the Basil pet carrier, but it's a wicker one, and I don't want one of those............even though I am a granny, I don't really want to look like one just yet lol. Does anyone know of any other great bicycle dog carriers? My pooch weighs 5kg.
Hi Annie.

On the Burische I have the following carrier:

Here

But that one takes a permanent fixture on the handlebar which I did not want to use for the Haibike. Lynda the one you saw in my picture does have a lead inside to prevent him jumping - but I still like him at the front so we can chat as we go along. He says things like 'faster faster!' - but only until you get to 30mph - then he says 'OK OK OK this is fun now!'. Really. He speaks perfect English.

btw I consider popping wheelies on Hammersmith broadway down two lanes of traffic and/or doing 146mph in a 40mph dangerous (ah those long forgotten mad mad days - lucky I am still alive really and lucky I never killed anybody huh?). Doing 32mph with my wee dog strapped into a basket on my e-bike does not really come into it! (really - I have calmed down a LOT).

Weather looks nice again today huh? :)

My folks in law used to cycle with their wee Scottie in a basket like that for years without a mishap. A lot of people did in those days. Seriously doubt the dog would attempt to jump out of the carrier at any speed - but if the bike did go over likelihood is he'd jump clear without much trouble. Might actually be more dangerous in a box he couldn't get out of.

But I do get what you're saying about the speed, funklyn - probably best to keep the speed down a bit - rather like when out with kids :). The dog is likely just not used to being in the basket - with a bit of familiarity he should settle down and won't be turning round for reassurance.

If nothing else, with some comfy padding it looks like a good TV viewing spot for him in the living room

He's used to it now - ever since he was a puppy he has been in one of those baskets - he once tried to jump out but being at the front you can see him and react right away (that was before I had a lead holding him in place).

Now with the lead in there which holds him quite firmly he never attempts to jump - just wines a bit as we get close to the Common as he obviously knows where he's going and is looking forward to his walk.

The wind reflector is an old slightly scratched visor off my crash helmet. I had to drill two holes each side and then bolt it to the basket and then use some gaffa tape to hold it at the front - but it works quite well - he ducks down to keep his head below but enables him to look out the front. Inside is lined with foam from an old excercise mat - which provides padding and makes it more comfy for him. Here's one more picture of him - he is such a sweetheart!

Jake is a really seriously cute dog , what is he ? He looks like a cross longhair/wire hair daxie/poodle ......gorgeous anyway, whatever he is......glad to hear you have him tethered in his basket, and as for him speaking english....of course he does, my Rico and Tikka speak perfect english too, but with an american accent, and Mia and Golly speak spanish as their first language but have a good grasp of english as well lolol ;)

Hi Lynda - he is a miniature schnauzer - 7 months old - and yes - very very cute! One major criteria (or is it criterion I never can tell but no doubt somebody here will tell me) for which breed to get was that they would have to be under 8Kg-ish so they could go on the bike! (I dont get my driving license back for another year) - he fits perfectly - currently weighing in at 6.5Kg but probably will top out a bit more - but still within spec.

You sound like you have a house full there yourself. Good for you. :)
