I contacted a respected EBIKE KIT vendor (mmmm clue maybe) with reference to the controllers that they supply with their kits.
They replied that they use only hall sensored controllers, as sensorless controllers require a speed of 3mph+ before they operate.
The E-crazyman sensorless controller that I'm using at the moment, pulls smoothly and quickly from standstill
It seems to operate no differently from the stock controller. Apart from the extra power that is ;)
Is this the next generation of controller that I'm using, or does the 3mph only apply to direct drive motors (mine's a geared)?

Well some are a little rougher from standstill in sensorless mode probably less apparent on geared motors due to the gear reduction allowing the motor to spin quicker.

However we sensored should be smoother and slightly more efficient.

What Scott said but I've not heard of the need to get to 3mph before they work....all mine work from stand still even with direct drive motors.

Maybe the first generation of sensorless controllers were less refined, and the guy was just relaying facts of old.

Some older non-sensor bikes did indeed need to be pedalled off the mark, but the Tongxin Nano setups have been able to standing start from the outset.
