Following the failure of STEPS, their last e-bike system, Shimano have announced a new one. No details but let's hope they've learnt from the obvious mistakes of their first effort:

If they do make it successful it's likely SRAM will be quick to follow with their own system. Diversity is a good thing, it's driving evolution.

Apart from my recent NuVinci problems, all my other woes have been with Shimano parts. I don't think I would have confidence in this product until well proved. And then some.

SRAM got there first with an automatic system. Information on this link

And they had an earlier system which was ultimately a failure, the Sparc rear hub motor.

Is the just because most parts are shimano !?

The alfine 8 hub I still think changed the market irrevocably - relaunching the hub gear into the mainstream. I love it - a totally bullet proof marvel of engineering at a great price point

I recall sTEPs battery has a claimed lifespan of 8000 charge cycles....hmmm
