Slightly technical query

I am trying to change the ignition barrel on my 2004 Powabyke.

It LOOKS as if it should be an easy enough fix.

But it isn't.

One seems to need three very small hands and very long thin fingers.

Has anyone else tried this--and if so--any tips?

Or should I just give it up and take the beast to the local dealer?

It can be quite tricky to change the barrel. It has two tiny little ears that need to be pinched together then it should slide out of the case. If you send me your email address I will try and find a diagram to email you.

On the subject of keyswitches. I couldn't turn off the power on Old Faithful one day. I took the keyswitch out and found that the battery positive wire had come adrift and was resting against its neighbour leaving the power on.

I took the thing apart and found that the contact had heated up and melted the plastic carrier a little and the solder had melted allowing the wire to come adrift. From what I could see the contact was a little off. I heated the terminal a bit and pushed it back through and let it cool whilst keeping the contact in situ. Then a little clean with emery paper and I had two perfect mating surfaces. After that I never had a problem. The other contact (that set PAS mode) was tilted slightly but that didn't mater as it was low current and a mode I never used. That got me to thinking that if the main contact was tilted it would be squeezing the current through a smaller surface area than required causing localised heating. Never had a problem with Old Faithful that I couldn't fix.

If the key switch is to be dumped for a new one I find it easier to insert a long thin scewdriver and snap off the lugs that are keeping it in. It is much easier that trying to squeeze them together down the end of a long hole. And if it is going to be thrown away knocking the lugs off doesn't really matter.
