Spare battery?

I wonder when some body will grasp the thorn and produce a lead acid battery at a low (by ebike standards) price which would function as a spare? My old Powabyke used to run for 20 miles on a £70 battery. A similar battery, if available, could save the life of many an old ebike. A multi-bike connecting cable would come in handy too!

Quite agree with you Tom, as I posted earlier, in another thread, I paid £250 for a hardly used Powacycle, which I consider a bargain.....but without the battery it would have been virtually worthless, I did consider getting a spare lythium polymer battery, but the price put me off the idea, there must be many old E-bikes out there that could be put to good use....if batteries were only cheaper.......Del.

It would be possible but the problem is volumes on a dying product...to produce such a battery in Asia the minimum volume would be 500 pieces. Also there is a strengthening green lobby in China who are fighting against any increase in lead acid production. Remember that normal auto batteries are not suitable for deep discharge usage,they are designed to create high cranking amps. You need deep cycle batteries for e-bike applications.

As spare battery, rather than getting the lead acid I'd say just get a second hand lithium battery that is few years old.

It would have maybe 60-70% of its initial capacity but it's still similar to lead and the price wouldn't be very different.

Another option is to go for modelism battery that sometime sell for very cheap with high capacity. Only issue is the additional care and requirement to have a voltmeter + new charger.

I have an SLA battery pack that came with my second-hand Sprint last year (replaced with a Ping battery). It is 36v/10Wh, was new last year, and has a charger. It has had very little use, has been kept charged, and used to take me about 18 miles with lightish pedalling. It has an attached cable to which would be easy to fit the connector of your choice. It is heavy, though, of course!

Anyone who is prepared to give me a tenner and collect it from mid-Herts is very welcome to it.
