They do say that one of the best things about retirement is waking up and knowing that you don`t have to go to work. I totally agree, and I make a point of doing it several times a day. I normally get up about 8 o`clock, but I was up at 7 this morning, and out on the road by 8. Sunshine, not much traffic about, and out of town, the grass was still wet with dew. We have waited a long time for this, but when it arrives it still catches us off guard.
When we get a cold wet spring, things are growing and flowering around us just the same, but it is almost as if we refuse to see them, like saying to ourselves "why are the hedges green in winter, must be an illusion, best ignore it ."
Then we get a day like today when it suddenly hits you, and you can ignore it no longer.
It demands your attention. It almost like seeing it all for the first time as a child. I cycled through a cathedral this morning. An avenue of old tall horse chestnut trees in full flower , growing to meet each other over the middle of the road. By comparison, mankind`s feeble attempts at cathedral building are just boring, dusty old grey things. In spite of my 66 years, I am suddenly 16 again inside my head.
Suddenly it is summer.
