Support stands (not bolted in) - like shop display ones

Looking for a basic heavy duty free-standing floor wheel support (or 2) for the MTB good for up to 2.4" tyres preferably, to drop my bike wheel into when being stored. Can use one for both front and rear wheels or just one for the front.

It doesn't need to be bolted down as the place it's going to be used is very secure. Bike weight will be about 26kg with stuff left on it.

Looked at the retail "customer" ones and they all look too expensive and flimsy to be in any way sensible for what I'm after.

Perhaps the retailers can advise the sort of thing they use for stock display as this seems much more what I'm after ?

The answer of course is to make your own...

If you have access to a welder then make it from metal.. if not then wood will do.

Hi Alex,

Agreed the cheap ones can often be 'nasty'.
We use wall mounted ones here (not what you are after.
Although I have seen these being used at trade show a lot - Reece Cycles PLC : Parts and Accessories

Of if you only want to hold 2 bikes these (As they slot together) - Reece Cycles PLC : Parts and Accessories

These should both be sturdy enough for 26KG..

Regards

You can make your own with a couple of quid's worth of steel. Mind you, the cost of a welder is higher but once you have one, the world is your shelly mollusc.

Thanks - it's only for 1 bike as mine will soon be parted to live many miles apart.. so the single Velomann stand would do. At £18 it's not worth making your own - unless it turns out to be flimsy or too skinny an aperture between the hoops for a wider spec MTB wheel to slot into.

However .... in the usual way, the relevant information (distance between support hoops to ascertain what tyres are compatible) is not given on any of the specs, the distributor doesn't know and won't have any back in stock for 3 weeks. I can probably learn to weld and make my own, or find a knock-off and get it sent from the other side of the world in the time it'll take to order one in for local delivery through a UK supplier. Plus ça change in the wonderful world of buying things retail, eh ? :)

Then I guess I get to "shell out" for the welding safety gear and the replacement parts too .... it's a nice thought but I'm sinking under the weight of new tools at the mo (in every possible sense) so might be better off waiting till there's something more serious to buy it all for.

Thanks. I'll do some measuring up ... got some answers on the Velomann ones and the supplier told me they're no good for bikes with disc brakes on account of the hoops being too close together to prevent the discs rubbing against the support frame.

LBS found me a centre mount kickstand which they reckon will fit in a 26" version - might make a decent pairing. They only had a 700C in stock unfortunately.

The 26" wheel is a bit smaller than a 700C .. which by luck is a good thing, as it means the stand wot they have in stock is a bit tall.

Remove rubber feet from stand.. cut a bit off each leg with your trusty hacksaw, push feet back on

Sorted.

Can even do it the techie way and measure, lol
