I maybe should confirm that looking after your Lithium battery over the winter or periods of non-use is probably the most important in terms of longevity.

If you want to keep your battery in the best possible condition there are three simple rules to follow.

During times of extended non-use.

1. Whilst in storage keep the battery topped up to about 2/3 capacity.
2. Top up your battery every 6 weeks whilst is is out of use.

At all times.

3. NEVER leave your battery completely depleted for more than a few days.

Follow these rules and you could happily be using the same battery for five years plus before it falls bellow 70% of it's original power.

Best regards

I've just bought a Canon compact camera (S95) and the manual states that the Li-on battery should be depleted before long term storage !?!

There are so many different chemistries used in lithium batteries, especially with regard to the cathodes, no hard and fast rules apply to all types.

For the large capacity types such as are used on e-bikes, they should never be empty.

Small cell lithium batteries such as those used in cameras and music players are often very hardy anyway. I have one from the mid 1990s in a portable mini-disc recorder that still has over two thirds of it's original capacity.
