Hello

I am having trouble with the battery on my synergie mistral, it is cutting out repeatedly. It only seems to cut out when using high power (sport mode). Turning the battery off then on again brings power back on, but only for a short while.

I have only started using the bike again recently after a long period, around 9 months due to personal circumstances.

Battery overheating?
Bad key switch?

Be good to hear some ideas on what you think the problem might be. I can't seem to find anything relative in the Battery FAQs.

Thanks

If the battery wasn't charged at least every two to three months during that period out of use, the battery has virtually certainly had it. Once put into service, the cells fail if not charged regularly thereafter. Its the low voltage safety cutout in the controller that's stopping it, switching off and on resets it.

Cutting out on maximum power due to failing to maintain voltage when under load is the first sign of a battery just about at the end of life.

We had the same problem with a Mistral battery, not because it had been unused, but because, after two years in daily use, it was past its best. A good substitute set of cells can be found here:

New 36V10AH Lithium Battery for electric Bike/Bicycles on eBay (end time 01-Aug-10 09:12:56 BST)

They first were sold in the Spring at £190 plus postage, then, when we bought, at £210 plus postage, and now £240 plus postage.

To transfer the cells you have to remove the top and base black plastic covers, and replace them with the covers from the Mistral battery. The orange and black leads from the Mistral top should both be connected to the black lead coming out of the cells, and the red to the red. Be careful to avoid shorts, and remove the two leads, black and red, which in the substitute battery go from the cells to the base connector which does not suit the Mistral.

We have found that the substitute cells are very good, giving I think the same range as the original battery, and one kilo lighter overall too.

Folks,

My worst fears have been realized, but thanks for all your help - really useful information.

Out of interest I asked Europa Bikes for a quote for a replacement battery in 2008 when I bought the bike, which was £158.00. I guess prices have steadily gone up!

The last price I saw for a replacement Mistral battery was £299, but by that time they were no longer available. Now that the Mistral is back on the UK market at a much higher price of £699, spare batteries may also be available again. The substitutes, whatever the price difference, will always however have the lower weight advantage.
