Just some articles I read on various developments going on , feel free to interject with you thoughts here and there.

Electric Bike Runs (Almost) on Water | Gadget Lab | Wired.com

60 miles on water ?

E-pedals ... has any one ever done this before ?

Any way, Just some things I came across , on my late - night trawl through the murky waters of cyber space..

NB*The epedals looks an interesting option for those us with less healthy joints and problems, but I do wonder how this would compare to motor - esp in the long run.

The pedals can be dismissed. The man clearly has mental health issues and is in need of sympathy and understanding, not cash.

Unfortunately, the bank didn't spot this and filled his pockets with our money.

Yes, the pedals idea is silly, any usable degree of power would just twist the pedals from under the feet and the range would be impossibly short if enough power was available.

Shimano's e-bike set is welcome as it brings more "big boy" sophistication to this field, but it's rather low powered and will be better once they've got more experience and offer a range of components rather than just the one set.

There have been other hydrogen fuel celled powered bikes previously for a decade now, even including an amateur built one, and the 60 mile range is normal for them, nothing special. The infrastructure problems will prevent their appearance for a very long time yet and those promoting them always avoid mentioning the inherent problems. The running costs of this one would be very high, far cheaper to run a moped.

Agreed, though fitting those pedals to our electric stilts may convince the HSBC to part with some silly money...

I think there's too much skill involved in the usage, and since these sort of powered devices are illegal everywhere in public in the UK, no future here.

It would be interesting to hear some views on this:

DREAMSLIDE - Discover new sensations

It is easy to be sceptical (a bike without a seat?!? was my initial reaction), but if it is thought of as a sort of pedal scooter giving some of the sensations of skiing or snowboarding, then it becomes more interesting.

The technical heavyweights on the forum (you know who you are!) may be interested in its pedaling system.

To me, it seems less practical and generally interesting than a bicycle, but too expensive to be a toy.

What do others think?

I tried this at the show on Thursday. I almost sat down which would have been embarassing!
The engineering pleased me, but the point was lost. I saw no efficiency gain and would have liked a seat. Maybe I'm missing the point?
(beautiful web site mind you)

Similar variable length crank systems have been tried many times before for the best part of a century. In theory you only need the maximum leverage on the down stroke and having to complete a full arc on the upstroke does involve surplus articulation which seems wasteful.

In practice though they seem weird, a bit like walking with a full forward stride while keeping the trailing leg swing short. Try it and you'll see what I mean!
