Fortunately I was straddling the bike at the time it happened. Two seconds before I was riding it... I stopped, then it went ping, and the two prongs of the forks flew off.

Yes, steel forks and a mid drive I think now.

I have two TA's on my front wheel set up also has the two AR washers inplace, the drop outs have been dremmelled so that the axle sits a bit deeper, if done properly then the drop outs should be able to cope.
Your drop outs more them likely already had an issue, hairline crack/stressed or was suffering metal fatigue before TA's were fitted so the inevitable was just waiting to happen. From scratch and fitted correctly a front wheel drive should give no issues even with ali forks.
