Being bright this morning and seeing as our electric supply was off for the day(it`s ok, I paid the bill:D they were replacing some rotten posts) I thought I`d grab a ride earlier than usual.
Happily plodding along enjoying womans hour in my left ear (don`t ask) I hear a vehicle coming towards me some way off. I then realise from the noise that we are going to meet somewhere near the next bend and judging by the tyre sound this car is going for it:eek: so, I`m ready and when it appears I`m half off the bike and on the verge as the lady driver skids around in and out of the mud with a shocked look on her face.

" You do know that other people use this road?" I scream out and she ducks her head and wheel spins away. Phew that was lucky and on April the first as well:) Single track road with blind bends and I reckon her speed as she saw me was between 50-60mph which as far as I`m concerned is about double the safe speed.(children walk up these lanes to meet the school bus)

Anyway, on I go and tell myself it ain`t gonna spoil my ride and continue to happily plod along.
a couple of miles down the road I see in the distance a van parked on the verge and as I get nearer I see what appeared to be a tree type surgeon with the yellow helmet and ear muffs. Our eyes meet and he grabs a branch out of the road so as I don`t run over it so I proceed and it`s then I catch site of his mate 50` up in an Oak tree and the chain saw is running and then a 3` length of trunk type sized timber falls right in front of me:eek:
As i passed the guy on the road I mentioned that he should have halted me till all was clear (well! that`s not quite the way I put it but there are ladies on this forum) Weight of log must have been at least 10Kg.

I wonder if my helmet would have helped to save me?? I probably would have been injured but might have escaped a crushed skull.

Home safe and warm now.

Can't remember which constabulary's website it was but I was reading their press releases and cops actually pointed out a cyclist was "saved" by his helmet from a glass bottle thrown at him by a passenger of a van!

mind you thats usually why the cops wear their helmets round this way

Good gravy it certainly wasn't your day today, mind you the way some people drive around here on the one car lanes I can sooo relate. I have perfected as by sounds of it you have making a hasty park in the hedgerow!

I'm afraid having known a tree surgeon years ago I never go past when one is working (saw running) especially if they are way up in a tree even if the muppet on the ground tells me to, he was always telling me that tree limbs over a certain size should be roped but frequently aren't and have a tendancy to go in a different direction than you want them to when cut.

Glad you survived your outing and can I just say 'Womens Hour'!!!!!! *lol*

Old Timer, you know how to live life to the max. I've had some near deaths in my time, usually up a mountain or white water rafting, If I'd have known sleepy old England could provide as many thrills, I'd have saved a load of time and money and popped round your way :D

PS have you made a youtube vid? I'd have loved to have heard the expletives :D

Meg

Well I just switched on my radio and they were talking about Paul Newman and Robert Redford and putting on clips from the films like Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid so I just left it on. Must be an age thing but radio 4 does have some interesting progs on at times and I`m a sucker for the Archers:D

I think it's more a retirement thing with Radio 4. From the moment I retired early at 54, I started listening to those interesting Radio 4 programs, so I guess it's more a matter of having the time to do it rather than being a certain age.

Yeh Tony, you are right and to be honest there is actually(as you know) such variation of themes throughout the day. I like a bit of music now and then but some of the more modern stuff they play is like water torture after a while.
