Hi all,

I'm looking to change out my Shwalbe Smart Sam tyres for something a little less chunky on my Cube Reaction if at all possible, and was hoping someone could help shed some light.

The current tyre is: Schwalbe Smart Sam, Active, 44x622

Now, from what I've read, the 622 is the rim size, so 700c should be fine? But I also want something less chunky (on my old bike I had Marathon Plus which I found brilliant, and not one puncture) which is the bit I struggle with, will any 700c tyre go on? Please could someone let me know if my old favourite tyres would fit or something similar that will, they were 700c 38c.

Thanks in advance for any help.

700c and 622 rim are indeed the same. You wont't fit a narrow 700c on that rim, but anything above 38 will probably be ok, maybe even 35. Marathon Plus are indeed brilliant at avoiding punctures (most of our tyres are MPs), but I think of them as pretty chunky.

The rim diameter/bead size (eg 622 for a 700c tyre) is what is absolutely critical, and the rim width must be in the right ballpark for tyre width but exact width does not matter. See https://www.cyclinguk.org/cyclists-library/components/wheels-tyres/tyre-sizes and many other web sites.

The trade found that people were almost getting to understand tyre sizes, so to ensure confusion they introduced 28" (some of which fit 622 rims and some not) and 29" (which do fit wider 622 rims).

Perfect, thank you very much for your help and additional explanation, that should help me moving forward :)

If you go the website of the wheel manufacturer they usually show the range of tyre widths that are suitable for each of their models.
