Tyre split, Why?

Hi,
My tyre has split! Can anyone tell me why should this happen? I don't particularly bang over curbs or bumps. I have the pressure quite high, and notice that my BMS made wheel is rather narrow.

How old is your tyre? Over time the ozone in the air we breathe breaks down rubber. In the area you have pictured, the rubber does not contribute much to the structural makeup of your tire. Its main function is to protect the cord body in the sidewall. Cord made with or containing organic fibres can break down quickly once exposed to the elements. My recommendation is to replace the tyre regardless of its age. It may be an old tyre on a newer bike.

Is the rider heavy?

That can lead to sidewall cracks on cheaper tyres.

I took a closer look at your tire photo. I would not ride your bike until the tire is replaced as you could suffer a blowout. On closer inspection, the cord body that wraps around the bead wire has failed due to age. You can see the bulge and deformaty in the side wall directly above the tear. That is one very badly deteriorated tire my friend.

You've been lucky that it didn't blow whilst going at speed.

If you're looking for a reasonably priced replacement, may I recommend the Schwalbe Land Cruiser tyre.
It rides well on the road, has low rolling resistance and is puncture resistant. It also provides some extra traction and grip on muddy sections of land.

Mystery solved! I bought an old but good mountain bike 3 or 4 years ago, fitted the electric wheel, and the old Schwalb hardly worn tyre. Since then I bought a couple of Schwalb Delta Cruiser tyres, and fitted one to another bike, leaving the other hanging up. I've been thinking that the offending tyre was new. I can now fit the second tyre, and also replace the original front tyre too.
The old tyre is quite wide, and looks good, these new tyres are fairly narrow, but as said, have a good rolling resistance.
It was a good job I spotted it, as it could have shortened my riding season
