I've cycled in all weathers for years without any major problem. This morning I set-off for work and was enjoying the ride in on my Pro Connect. Conditions were perfect - warm, dry and no wind.
I got to where there are major roadworks taking place and noticed that again there was water on the road. It looked like they had a leaking hydrant or something. There have been complaints from residents in the area about the mud/dust on the roads. The roads are swept by a road sweeper but it doesn't seem to clean the road very well.
I rode across the main road and through the standing water and the next thing I knew I was in a heap on the ground and having a bit of difficulty breathing. I stayed down until I was able to breath normally again and a motorist moved my bike to the side and checked that I was OK. A 'sympathetic' cyclist coming the other way said it was a spectacular crash and that it was a pity I didn't get a video of it.
I can only assume that there was mud under the water as it was like hitting black ice. There was no warning.
I'm sitting at work now and the pains are starting to hurt - scuffed knee, forearm, left wrist stiffening up and shoulder beginning to hurt. Fortunately the bike seems to be OK.
I find it unbeleivable that on the perfect cycling day that this could happen.

Sorry to hear about your tumble Walkerman - I think there are sea monsters lurking in the puddles around here - They've caught me out once too.

Sounds like oil, that's not good. You should call the council and insist they clean it up immediately or the next person on two wheels may not be so lucky.

I phoned the local paper because I don't want this happening to other cyclists as it is on the C2C Route.
The reporter got back to me to tell me that the building contractor was blaming the water board - presumably for putting the water over the mud

As Mussels said, that sounds very much like a diesel oil slick on the road, when moistened again by water it's as slippery as an ice sheet, lethal stuff.

I hope the aches and pains soon ease for you.
