I've cycled in all weathers for years without any major problem. This morning I set-off for work and was enjoying the ride in on my Pro Connect. Conditions were perfect - warm, dry and no wind.
I got to where there are major roadworks taking place and noticed that again there was water on the road. It looked like they had a leaking hydrant or something. There have been complaints from residents in the area about the mud/dust on the roads. The roads are swept by a road sweeper but it doesn't seem to clean the road very well.
I rode across the main road and through the standing water and the next thing I knew I was in a heap on the ground and having a bit of difficulty breathing. I stayed down until I was able to breath normally again and a motorist moved my bike to the side and checked that I was OK. A 'sympathetic' cyclist coming the other way said it was a spectacular crash and that it was a pity I didn't get a video of it.
I can only assume that there was mud under the water as it was like hitting black ice. There was no warning.
I'm sitting at work now and the pains are starting to hurt - scuffed knee, forearm, left wrist stiffening up and shoulder beginning to hurt. Fortunately the bike seems to be OK.
I find it unbeleivable that on the perfect cycling day that this could happen.
