using a multi meter

The light on my charger has stopped going green to show that the battery is fully charged,the red charging light is staying on,how can i test with a multi meter if its the battery or the charger at fault,i am a little unsure of where to turn the dial on the multi meter, to check the charger amps going into the battery ,also when taking readings from the batteries can you check anything other than the voltage,what should a fully charged 12v 14ah lead acid battery read.

Hi,
you can check to make sure that the voltage from the battery is 12v, place the dial on multimeter to 20V (volts) and place the +ve (red) probe on the live connector on the battery and -ve (black) probe on the other battery connector. The reading should be 12v anything less suggest that there is a problem with battery
