It'll run twice as fast at 48v. That'll be OK on a bike with 20" wheels if you can find one with good enough handling and brakes, but on a bike with 26" wheels or bigger, it'll be too fast for it's power and it'll run very inefficiently, which will overheat both the controller and motor.

Don't even think of running the Ego at 48v. The brakes are just not up to it. if you double the speed, you have four times the amount of energy to dissipate, which means the brakes have to be four times the power. Also, rim brakes don't have the modulation you need for high speed braking with small wheels. Another problem you'd have is traction. The front wheel will slip at the slightest provocation and you'll need a new tyre every month.

Even 36v would be a bit dodgy, but If you like dangerous living, that's as high as you should go.
