What do you wish you had known?

I’ve just spent some time reading through some of the stickied posts on here like this one - Just Registered? Introduce yourself here! - and reading some of your stories and lessons from electric bikes. I think this forum is a great place for people to share knowledge and experiences, but not everyone finds this ‘haven’ straight away.

If there was one thing you wish you had know before finding the Pedelecs forum, what would it be?

Picking some of the favourites out from previous threads:

  • Cyclist and electric cyclist culture is very different.
  • Electric Bike Laws
  • The Cycle to Work Scheme
  • Manufacturers performance specs can be ambitious!
  • New technology can be risky
  • Electric Bikes can get you back to cycling
  • The battery replacement costs are a surprise
  • Wish they'd found the Pedelecs Forum earlier

The last 4 on that list is what I'd go for, as well as some bike dealers making ridiculous claims about specifications, particularly regarding range and battery life. And there seems to be plenty of dealers willing to rip you off and offer no after sales service at all.

I wish I had found out earlier how good a Swiss flyer X model was, when I was still working and might of just afforded it (if I could get it passed the wife)

hi eddieo, when you get one let us all know just how good these bikes are.
the price tag is high from what i can see. is there anywhere in the uk these can be seen and have a test ride.?? the spec and options to customise looks amazing...........would imagine its only 10% of the cost of a motorhome....!!!
regards

Not tried the Swiss flyer but I wish I'd discovered just how good the Panasonic drive system is before spending money on essentially flawed hub drive systems. ;)

I wish I had known that some ebikes would be more difficlut to ride without power

I feel a bit lazy having pedal assist on for almost all journeys

Donna
So do I, but I don't care. I now have power on all the time. I wouldn't bother otherwise.

Interesting reading some of these comments. Sounds like most of you wished you tried a few out before you bought?

True time and time again. That's we always advise trying a few out, and especially one of the drive-through-gears type like the Paansonic powered ones and one of the hub motor type. Preferences vary widely and are very individual.

I think anyone should be prepared to take time out and spend travel money in order to try some, it can save money in the long run.

I agree, for all the Panasonic converts on here, I just didn't find it a natural feeling and prefer a more 'bicycle' feeling with money spent on lightweight, quality components and a hub motor. Pedalling at higher cadences with motor assist is more my style. That is not to say the Panasonic is a lesser system, a hub powered bicycle just suits me better. I'd still like to try an X-Flyer though!
