i have been reading about what is legal to ride on the road as far as electric bikes are concerned.

this is what it says on the department of transport website:

"Maximum continuous rated power output of the motor shall not exceed

- Bicycle: 200W - Tandem Bicycle: 250W - Tricycle: 250W"

what does that mean?

can i buy a bike with a 250w motor or 300w?

the reason i ask is because i am a heavy lad i would think i would need a more powerful motor but would that make the bike illegal?

any ideas?

You can safely buy a 250 watt rated one, most are that now, but no higher. 300 watts rating is illegal.

Technically it's still a 200 watt limit in Britain at present, but the law revision in hand will make that 250 watts very shortly.
