What motor did I just buy?

So I tried to buy a 100mm Tongxin motor from China but it doesn't look how I expected it to. Can anybody identify this motor? The "SWX" part of the model number hints at a Bafang/8Fun but I would have thought it would have a brand marking. It also looks like it is a 80mm width motor with a big spacer to make it fit a 100m dropout. When I turn it in hand it sounds like it uses a friction roller as I can't hear or feel any nylon gears being engaged.

Of course it might be what I actually ordered (100mm/36v Tongxin) but I suspect something got lost in translation instead!

Oh GOSH

Now I don't feel so bad LMAO.

Don't worry, it is a Tongxin. Its made for a roller brake and width will be 100mm if one was used. You are going to have to do some surgery to sort it out :p

Even then though, it will end with as an 80mm wide motor which may not suit your requirement.

See here

And here which shows you how to take it apart.

Give me a shout if you need any more info. Who did you get it them from ?

PS if an 80mm Tongxin is no good for you then there are sure to be a few Brompton owners on here who will take them off your hands and you will easily get your money back :D

That said I notice they are 190 RPM so a little slow for a 16" wheel.

PS you may still be able to use the spacer and fit it in front fork with 100mm spacing

Just like me

(less assistance => forces me to pedal more ;) )

Well thanks for the clarification. I guess I'm going to have to suck up the loss on this one. I ordered the motors from "Billy" at "desheng-intl" but I guess all the recent 80mm brompton orders he has been getting from this forum has confused him slightly so I ended up getting a little bit of both.

Obviously I wanted a 100mm/190rpm motor (ala cytronex) but ended up with a 80mm motor with an rpm too low for a bromton. Of course if anyone wants to take these motors (yes I bought two!) off my hands then I'll be happy to do so.

I figure putting them in a 700c wheel with the spacer is going to be a pain (asymmetric wheel build for one) and the performance characteristics are going to be quite different to what I had planned on.

Billy should know by now that we don't want these motors. It has come up several times

Looking back through my emails with Billy I see where the misunderstanding came from. He asked at one stage whether I wanted a "80mm roller motor" to which I said "no" but I did clarify and say that I wanted a "Tonxgin friction roller" motor. I guess my meaning for "roller" (friction gears) and his meaning for "roller" (brakes) confused matters.

Oh well such is life. Hopefully I can find someone to buy both the motors off me. I reckon £70 is a reasonable price for each one.

Sorry to hear it didn't work out with the motors. I guess sending a picture of the motor you need is always a good idea when asking Billy what you want.

Well I did include a link to tongxin's site and a schematic of the 100mm motor but I guess the whole "roller" confusion rendered that moot.

I also have a couple of controllers that came with them that I can probably flog too. Dunno what the going rate is on them - £20?
