After the early reports in 2013, more in 2014, I expected the market to have a number of two speed motors in 2015

Perhaps nervousness, they've got what works and might not like being first with a new untried system?

Or it could be just too much choice of motors, crank units from Bosch, Yamaha, Panasonic plus others from China. Also geared and direct drive motors now from Europe and Japan as well as the usual selection from China.

We know a two speed hub motor has a technical advantage, but a supplier needs to be convinced that it has a marketing advantage with Joe Public before making the decision.

I think the industry is quite conservative, for good reason.
There are plenty of interesting motors but only 8-Fun have established a very good reliability record. My favorite at the moment is the bmsbattery's Q128H with two stage reducer, a cheap cousin of the Panasonic hub motor.

The first ones were a bit noisy, which might have put people off. The latest ones are totally silent, so you should start seeing them soon. Having said that, most OEMs are very conservative. I would expect to see them turning up on Ebay bikes first.
