Hi,

Has anybody on here had any dealings with this company and can offer subsequent feedback?
I understand the bikes on sale are not UK legal ? (1000w) or am i mistaken.

You're correct Andy, a rating of 1000 watts is not legal in the UK or the EU. The maximum allowed nominal rating is 250 watts.

I have no knowledge of the Wing company's bikes

The new UK/EU regulations of April 2015 dictate that an e-bike must not exceed the rated power of 250W
to be road-legal. A purchase of the common high powered electric bike will come with its
legal implications if ridden on the road. On the other hand, the practicality of a road-legal e-bike
means giving up the fun one could have on a Wing eBike power machine off-road.
Wing eBikes have developed a system that allows the user to swap between
two modes depending on whether you are on-road or off-road,
allowing you to unlock the full power, where it is safe and legal to do so.

WING™ eBikes can come pre set to the road-legal mode of 250W by default.
The dual-mode system is embedded in the LCD3 Dashboard which can unlock
the full power of the system with the press of a few buttons.
If you are after maximum exhilaration, fun and speed in an off-road environment, look no further!
This is the first e-bike that can offer 1000W worth of thrill,
yet still capable of being reconfigured for safe road-legal journeys.

Technically it's not right, therefore illegal. The DfT calls any button to change the system to an illegal spec an "off-road" button and stresses that they are not permissible and strictly illegal. A strict interpretation of the law could say that the last button pressed to effect the change is the "off-road" button.

The trouble is that quite a few reputable pedelecs now sold as legal can be changed into illegality via their LCDs. At present they are getting away with it and look likely to continue to.

The law needs clarification. One option is a ruling that any such change is illegal and makers must stop supplying like that.

The other option is for the law to state that any single action must not switch to illegallity, thus ruling out a simple changeover while riding.

Since the Wing has the same LCD changover as many well known "legal" e-bikes, buying one shouldn't be a problem. But if the 1000 watt mode is used and one is caught, it could mean trouble.

The law isn't the only problem your insurance company is the other. If you get in a you responsible accident it will be best if you don't have any money or belongings their law company can pounce upon...

These were the only questions my insurance company asked me: "is the motor 250 W nominative?", "does the motor cut out at 25 km/h?"
