I got a very similar one from Hobby King (DE Warehouse) and it's got a scale :p

OK ... I have the soldering station but am waiting for some proper solder ordered off e-bay (100g of 60/40 22swg 0.7mm) which I hope is the right thing for jobs ahead.

Old_Dave, is this the one you got ?

Soldering Station with Adjustable Heat Range with EU plug

I still have time to swap over the Maplins one if it is better to have the scale and it's otherwise just as decent .. quite a bit cheaper too.

In the meantime, have read up a bit more on soldering and think I need to practice on some old wire for a bit before going at my component parts. Took a good hard objective look at the light having been able to get into it with help on here. Basically, the soldering is sound. The only thing wrong is the wire insulation. I have used somefresh insulation tape bought at Maplins to carefully wrap each wire individually and then twist together and wrap again on the outside overlapping the thick outer black sheath several times.

Then fitted the quick-release bracket

Tested and worked perfectly straight off. If it fails again I will revert and desolder/resolder the connections. Hopefully the repair will last longer than my last attempts - wire within the light housing was exposed and I think this is what was causing it to fail (black and red bare wires touching). As these have now been properly wrapped with insulation in theory all should be OK.

Looked into the grommits ... not really going to work, as the hole the wire exits is 5mm and I think you need about 8-odd mm dia. for most plugs. In fairness, probably overkill for the application but useful to know about those bits as can think of other times they would come in handy .

Thanks for all the help.

Yes that's the one, don't know about cheaper cos you have to add the delivery charge, but I'm sure you will do the maths.

I haven't got around to checking the accuracy of the scale.. but will get around to it one day

To repair that light, you should unsolder the wires; cut the wires back to where the insulation is good; strip a couple of mm of insulation off the ends; tin them with solder - adding a bit more solder than to fill the wires; add a little solder to the pads; resolder to the original pads. I'd then squirt a little hot-melt glue into the hole to keep the wires from movement. That insulation tape will soon wear through.

OK I'll get on it after I've practiced the soldering a bit and my skills are up to it (i.e. after the solder arrives and I've faffed about with some old flex lying about ... bound to be at least one defunkt soup maker in the 'gadgets which worked for a week' pile I can cut some wires off. :)
