I Love my bike, apart from the brakes. What Brakes! it's only six months old and have never seen rain(ish)

The brakes on a Wisper 905se sport 2009 are rubbish and thats fair!

Not one Iota would stop me in the wet!! Very angry!

To try and stop in the wet, applied brakes....Nothing. Front disc is a danger like a knife through butter. Back pads were better but still did not stop me in time. And yes am still in full of my faculties. Used up all of my soles on my trainers and still nothing.................crash!

Don't get me wrong the bike is brilliant but it almost cost me my life. The Brakes are rubbish and should be discontinued! (brakes)

No. I was not going fast, I was going downhill very carefully
(I have three kids to support) I really thought that was it.

Wisper, you really need to get a grip on your brakes. they are a danger! Well mine are.

Gosh I'm pleased to alive!

Thunder, I appreciate that you should get better at the price you paid for the bike but if you can stretch to spending a bit more you could get an Avid BB7 front disk brake - you won't regret it. Others on this forum have swapped to this brake and have favourable things to say about it. I think they are fantastic. One thing you possibly could try is using some Muck-Off disk brake cleaner before you decide to swap it out. It may just be that you have some oil/WD40 on your disk brake/brake pads.

Also, even if you don't go for a new front disk brake you should definitely buy some decent long brake blocks for your rear wheel. I use Jagwire and it's amazing how much better they are than cheaper brake blocks.

The BB7 is called that as it uses ball bearings, the Promax on the 905 also works the same and I can't see it being that much better. Someone from a bike shop who serviced a 905 made a similar comment saying the BB7 on the Wisper didn't really work.
If you are going to spend good money on the brake then I'd recommend a Juicy3, the reviews all say outstanding performance on a budget hydraulic brake system.

Last time I looked a front brake was about £70 (caliper and lever) and is a disk brake so won't replace a set of V brakes.

Mussels, you probably didn't quite have it set up right. The pads have to be exactly (well more or less anyway) flat with respect to the disk and the disk should lie about a third of the way out from the non-moving pad. There's a bit of a knack to it. If you get that right then the BB7 is outstanding, and it shouldn't matter what the make of bike since it is a self contained unit. A lot of people even rate the BB7s more highly than hydraulics in reviews on the internet. Plus you get the bonus of not having the additional maintenance overhead of hydraulics. The only thing I found with my BB7s was that there was a run in period of a ride or two so I wouldn't recommend swapping both at exactly the same time.

Do the BB7s fit straight on without any fettling ?
I don't know how the Wisper is set up but I know that BB7s will fit straight on to a post mount (screwed in from the direction of the side of the bike) and also come with an adapter for the more common IS mount (screwed in from the direction of the front of the bike). I would assume that the Wisper uses one of these standards. In fact as far as I know they are the only disk brake standards!

905se sport Wispers flag ship so why do they fit cheap brakes that don't work?.
Juicy 3 brakes. (EXCELLENT) under £50.00 at Cycle sports UK and they are making a profit, so how much are Wisper who are buying in bulk paying for what they fit, it's got to be a lot less than £50.00 on a £1450.00 bike they are having a laugh.

Is that why they call it there flag ship because you have to carry a anchor around with you to stop it.

Come on Wisper fit good brakes it's a basic requirement. isn't it??.

I haven't tried fitting them, it was an observation from a bike mechanic who posted on here.
Personally I haven't had a lot of trouble with the 905 brakes in the wet, I think something else wrong with them if he had that much trouble.

I have had my Wisper for about a year and a half now and its still going. Not stopping just still going. The brakes as has been said sooooo many times on this forum are a CRA* Waste of time. I changed the cables which made a little bit of difference the right way. Wisper were going to send me some longer levers and a lock for the battery but nothing yet:-( 1 year on?
You will get broken spokes and leaking forks and loose bars. Going to try and get some spokes today if i can. The die hards on here will keep telling you to adjust and adjust and you won't be doing it right? Always the same reply:)
Bottom line is... The BRAKES ARE PANTS and you will adjust every time you mount it! The rest of the bike is ok and only ok for the money. Dont get me wrong, I wouldn't be without it now but there are a lot better out there.
Have fun:-D

I was keen on the BB7 untill I read a review from someone who gave them a 5 star rating but said:

"Negatives would be the disk rotor being warped slightly from the box ... Nothing which can't be fixed by using a smooth spanner to carefully bend the disk straight."

wisper brakeing system

Hi, This is Dick Lai from Wisper shanghai base. I log this forum very often. I saw this post. Due to I'm not English, not sure my Chinese English expression will express original intention wrong, anyway, I have not the problem between UK colleague's communication. Hopefully will visit London later this year to feel pure English physically. With the encouragment from you folks here, I think I will reply more questions here in future.

Regarding the brake system. Wisper's 2008 and 2009 version bikes made a big improvment of the braking performacne. The 2007 version's brake levers were not good enough(has not enough pulling distance to have the disc brake stopped, but from my memorize, David replaced that levers free of charge in 2008).

Can anybody send the pictures of their brake levers to me? So I can express the fair attitude and seek solutions against it. Normally, the disc brake pad and V brake shoes need to be maintained or replaced after some periods of riding. Don't worry.... Wisper team will do the best to serve the users!!! Any questions in future, please contact the related dealers, Nomran at Wisper's UK service department or me in the fareast shanghai(dicklai@wisperbike.com)

Enjoy your Wisper bikes!!!

Brakes

Thanks for the heads up Thunder, as everyone has seemed to be happy with the new 2009 braking system we thought we had the issue sorted. We do not use cheap brakes as intimated in this thread and Dick and Dorris if you have not received promised replacements after a year why on earth have you not contacted me? I have a PM box and am constantly posting my personal phone number and email address 07733226906 miall@aol.com! If you need replacements simply email Norman at service@wisperbikes.com and he will get them to you. You know our service is second to none and if the replacements have not arrived in twelve months there may have been a glitch?

As has been reported by Eddeio we are all very busy at the bike show in London, however Norman has stayed in the office today to get this situation resolved and as you can see from the time of this post I am going to be late in due to calls to china specifically on the topic.

I worry thunder that there was a little oil or residue on your discs that until the rains came down had not effected the braking. Norman will check into that today. It may simply be they need thoroughly cleaning before delivery.

Until I have more information from Norman, who as I say will be looking into the problem today, I can't make further comment or offer advice. I will ask Norman to Post here as soon as he has some answers.

Needless to say we will resolve the issue and replace the brakes free of charge if necessary.

It would be great if anyone having any braking issues could email Norman at service@wisperbikes.com and give as full as description of the problems as possible.

Any one experiencing braking problems should not ride their bikes until the problem has been rectified.

We will sort this out as a matter of extreme urgency.

Regards David

Brakes

As a matter of interest, those that have met me know that I am no light weight and tip the scales at an embarrassing 20 stones.

I ride my 905se Sport on a daily basis rain or shine and have never had a brake problem.

We have sold 1000's of bikes now and since the 2009 brake upgrades have had very few complaints. This leads me to think that there must be the occasional brake set that is not up to spec. From today I have included wet brake testing in our quality control procedure to ensure non of these problems reoccur.

WILL ANYONE EXPERIENCING POOR BRAKING ON THEIR WISPER PLEASE CONTACT ME IMMEDIATELY AT MIALL@AOL.COM

I WILL ARRANGE TO HAVE THE BRAKES REPLACED.

If the poor performance is simply due to bad adjustment or worn parts we would will have to charge. However if we have supplied poor or faulty components we will carry out any work needed free of charge.

I need the battery and frame numbers, to confirm they actually are Wispers, sorry about this but we have had a lot of problems with people believing they have Wisper bikes but actually have the rip off clone. If it doesn't say Wisper on the frame it isn't a Wisper.

Best regards David

Wisper brakes

Just to confirm Davids earlier comments we are investigating this problem as a matter of urgency.

I would strongly recommend cleaning braking surfaces both on the discs and rims of new 2009 model Wispers before riding the bike for the first time to ensure any manufacturing residues are removed. Proprietary brake cleaning fluids are available from most cycle outlets or a suitable degreasing solvent can be used providing it does not leave a greasy residue or present any other hazard. Do not attempt to clean the friction material though and dispose of any contaminated brake pads and replace with new items

A similar cleaning process should be used before replacing disc pads or brake blocks during routine maintenance.

If any Wisper owners are concerned that the disc pads on their new 2009 bikes have been contaminated with manufacturing residues please contact me via wisper.service@wisper bikes.com and I will provide replacement pads immediately.

I hope you do! Do not worry about your English, as it is better than some fo the young people in England  - I'm sure if you give an answer and there is any confusion due to language barriers that all the people here will help to clear up this confusion..

I am half Chinese myself - my father was from the Chinese community of Malaysia (the Hokkien people).

As well as Wisper being very good bikes, the other reason I like them is because I can see the videos of all the people in the Chinese factory and how happy and enthusiastic they seem to be (no other e-bike manufacturer has done this).

Do they sell Wisper in Malaysia? I think it would be good for more people to ride e-bikes more out there as it might stop the terrible pollution..

Hi Alex,

Thanks! Nice knowing you are half Chinese.

Wisper has not dealers in Malaysia yet. Hopefully near future!

Cheers!

All the best,
