Wisper battery charger

The Wisper battery charger gets quite hot when in use, I've noticed. It gets hot top and bottom and makes a slight smell. My old 905e charger did this too. David Miall did mention to me something about having a fan-cooled charger for the bike at some point in the future, so presumably heat generation is undesirable.

In order to allow the dissipation of heat from my charger, I removed the small rubber feet, which exposes four crosshead screws. Undoing these enables the lid to come off easily. Inside the charger is a large aluminium heat sink. I then drilled holes in the top of the case... not particularly scientifically placed, I hasten to add. Heat from the heat sink can leave the charger by these holes and the charger definitely runs a lot cooler. I'm assuming that this will increase the life of the charger. I've attached a pic....

I always run a fan next on my Daughters 905e charger well charging, as you say they do get hot if not, your solution could save me a little money in my electric bill:) .

Chargers

Hi

Yes they do run a little warm but they are perfectly safe, however the new charger on the 2008 905 range is fan cooled and are available for £35.00 to owners of wisper bikes.

How do you attach an image Jim?

All the best David

I have no doubt that the charger is safe it’s just a precautionary measure as the charger is on at least 3 hour every day, and I would want it to last as long as the life of the bike, which has been a lovely bike has never let us down, never cut out, goes 19mph and has only needed normal bike maintenance i.e. oil chain tighten spokes check nuts and bolts adjust brakes, and cleaning:) .

Hi David. You may have to reduce the size of your image to make it small enough to upload. I did that with the 'gorgonzola' charger attached to my posting. £35 for a fan cooled charger is good, David. I have two normal chargers, actually. I bought a used one as a spare but it would be good if you could attach an image of the new charger.

I must say, the Wisper name has been mentioned a lot on Pedelecs lately! :) For the record, my 905se is absolutely brilliant and so much better than the 905e I bought from you originally. I was out on it today and, with all the improvements that you have made, it's my ideal bike. I reckon it's the most attractive looking bike on the market and, now that the wiring fault is fixed thanks to you taking the trouble to help (as I have posted repeatedly on this forum), it's brilliant. It's also fast and the new 14AH battery has loads more range than the 10AH that the 905e had. Also, for me, the quietness of the motor is a major plus. 15 miles today through the countryside and riverbanks and no irritating whine, wizzing or whatever. Just a barely audible hum.

Once you have info on the updated version of the bike, do let me know!

The 905e, it had Knight rider stickers on it when I first got it (second Hand), I think it was a very early model, my daughter has it now she’s 6.5 stone, 5`6" tall, living in the flat lands (Norfolk) so no strain on the battery or motor, its a year and a half old now, and still going strong:) .

Yes, Wisper did some sort of deal to acquire the Knight Rider model (which was being sold by The Electric Transport Shop in Cambridge) I bought one of those new from Wisper too when they first came out. It's good to know that yours is still going strong. I changed the forks to much better ones, and the head bearings, and the bottom bracket bearings and a few other modifications. Then, for some reason which I can't understand now, I sold it and built a bike with a brand-new Heinzmann kit.....it was awful! Powerful but not much range and really noisy, with no pedelec mode.

The 905SE is a really big improvement on the 905e in terms of forks, ride and other things (also more expensive). As you can see from my postings, I'm really pleased with it! Equilibrium is now restored.

By the way, I don't know if you saw my postings but I've found all the spares we'll need... controller, motor, pedelec sensor... all for under £100 delivered. My plan is to keep my 905SE running for ever.....if you need any, I'll pass the details on to you..

That whould be good.

We seem to have gone down the same path in the start of are ebike days my second ebike was also a Heinzmann kit, which a put in a 26” mtb front wheel, I liked it plenty of toque but not very much on the top end around 14mph sold for double the amount I payed for it:D , I picked up a powabyke which I striped and put in the back wheel to try and improve the top speed having to kits on one bike worked but got a little two heavy:( , from there I managed to get my hands on Flecc`s Giant lafree which is my spare or Sunday Bike, my main bike now is a 30mph modded Ezee sprint:) .

Hi David

That sounds "Cool" lol!
I would like one in a couple of months although I haven't found my charger gets too hot? My laptop charger seems to get far hotter :D and that hasn't given me a problem in over two years but I do like the sound of the added extra's installed in the new charger.
Regards

Hi Jimmy

Hope you are well and am glad you are now enjoying your SE! As it should be, lol!
Well guess I have loved mine from the start but I have only used mine in motor mode and also pedalled when I want to go even faster so didn't effect me quite so much.
However, with the rewiring done the bike does seem to go a little faster in my mode as clocked it on the cycle computer.
The throttle in my case was fully responsive in my prefered mode in the first instance but I may give the pedelec mode a go now on weekends on quiet roads to see how it go's? :) The wiring problem may also have been down to my cut outs in the motor mode on the odd occasion, so thank you for that info Jimmy, my bike is even more brilliant to ride!

The bike is a good looking electric bike and rides like a dream and after reading previous threads that are thankfully closed and not altogether a positive view on this bike, I would just like to say that I have no problems at all with this bike at present and find it a joy to ride. However, I am sure if I do have problems, as I have had minor one's, there will be people to assist.

I feel that David at Wisper replies to emails very positively and very quickly and if people have any issues I would suggest email him direct and I am sure he will endevour to assist you in any problems regardless of where the bike was purchased from.

Kind Regards

Mandy

David,
the charger in the photo would appear to be exactly the same as the one supplied for charging Phylion batteries fitted to Ezee bikes, but the one you have shown does not look like it has the correct plug for the Lishen Wisper batteries. I assume the one you supply will be fitted with the correct plug?

Hi Frank

Thanks for your response to Rob's email.

We are too growing tired of this and have handed the matter over to our solicitors to make clear our responsibilities. We would write to him but we don't have his address or telephone number and by the looks of it neither do you, I did not realise he didn't buy it from you either!

Best regards David

Hi John,

I am not aware of the charger that Ezee use or it's spec so I can't comment, sorry.

We do not use Lishen batteries now after experiencing problems with them. We have however been to the Lishen factory to discuss the problems and Lishen are now completely redesigning their ebike battery, we may buy Lishen again in the future.

We will however make certain that any chargers supplied to existing customers will have the correct lead and connector to suit their batteries.

Thanks for pointing this out to me.

Best regards David

The Rob saga

Rob, all you have to do is make contact with us in the normal manner. As I have said in my previous post I will not be drawn into any pointless arguments on this Forum.

Incidentally we do not charge for this wiring alteration and never have done so, we were going to but as it is so easy and quick to complete that we do it as a service to our customers.

If you would like to call us on 01425 627 641 we would be delighted to talk you through the fix and discuss your warrantee issues with you.

Best regards David

The charger that David illustrates is a type from one large manufacturer of these, used on many different makes of Chinese manufactured e-bikes.

However, although the case, fan and switches are common, the internals come in many different versions so they cannot necessarily be used between brands. In fact some of them are for NiMh batteries, so very different and those must never be used on Li-ion batteries.

As a general rule, it is possible to get generic NiMh chargers, but with Li-ion batteries it's always safest to use only the charger the manufacturer supplies.

I need to point out that the posting of private communications between individuals and companies is not acceptable on the forum unless all parties have given their consent in writing.

While personal experience is welcome on the forum we cannot be dragged into potential legal disputes and ask that everyone respects the above.

Hi David, what were the problems with the Lishen batteries and how does the brand you are currently using differ?
