Riese & Müller and Wisper form new collaboration in the UK

Riese & Müller Germany and Wisper Bikes UK, have today announced the signing of an exclusive distribution agreement.

Wisper bikes, better known for the manufacture and distribution of electric bicycles, have been appointed the UK distributors of Riese & Müller’s complete range; including the iconic Birdy folding bike. Wisper Director David Miall said “We are delighted to be representing such a well respected European manufacturer. Although our immediate interest was the blueLABEL and Riese & Müller branded electric bicycles, we could see the obvious advantages of stocking all Riese & Müller’s models, both standard and electric.” Miall went on to say “I believe this is the first time an electric bicycle specialist in the UK has taken on a range of non-electric bikes. Perfect for the integration of electric bikes into mainstream IBDs”

Markus Riese and Heiko Müller met in the late 80s while studying mechanical engineering at the Technical University of Darmstadt. Both keen cyclists, they formed Riese & Müller in 1993, immediately winning the Hessen Innovation Award for a brand new folding bike design. The new bike, the Birdy, was launched in the same year and quickly gained a reputation for being an extremely comfortable and agile, full suspension bicycle that quickly folded for ease of transportation.

Inspired by the mountain bike boom Markus Riese and Heiko Müller were convinced that full suspension bikes with 26'' tyres were the ideal combination for comfortable day-to-day riding. The newly developed full suspension 26” bicycles quickly became a favourite amongst people for whom the bicycle occupies an important place in their daily routine.

In 2008 as environmentally conscious living became more important to the people of Germany, especially in urban areas, Riese & Müller began developing a range of innovative E-bikes. Their success was both immediate and enormous. Riese & Müller’s high-quality, full suspension bikes provided the perfect base for easy to ride, comfortable and safe electric bicycles. Riese & Müller’s goal is to become Europe’s leader in Premium E-bikes.

Congratulations on the new agency David. The Birdy has a huge following in Germany and many loyal fans in other parts of Europe and the USA. Some groups have even done long distance touring on them, uncommon for the folding bikes world.

Maybe we'll see a better fan base here in Britain now.

Hi Croxden, firstly, thanks for investing in a Grace MX! A superb bike.

Reise & Muller's designs are more aimed at the urban commuter and day to day cyclist. The MX would certainly still be my first choice for trail riding. I get mine back from the press and demo tour today, I am so looking forward to getting up into the North Downs woodland trails again to see the last of the blue bells!

All the best

Thanks Flecc!

R and M bikes are traditionally based on comfort and efficiency. The Birdy is no exception. Although I have had very little chance to give one a long test, the short ride I did have was really quite a strange experience. The riding position and "feel" was more akin to a 26" hybrid than a folding bike and the suspension was smooth and very effective. As I gradually get fitter and thinner I must admit to rather hankering after my own non-electric 14 speed Birdy Rohloff Disc! I'll need to save up first though!
