I hope I got that URL right!

Just read the latest edition which happened to include several bikes I like. It's nice to have something other than A2B reviewing ebikes but I just get the impression it's like the motoring correspondent of your local rag reviewing the latest cars. The one who does it in my local Gazette never ever says anything negative about any cars....probably because he's frightened that he'll never get any more cars to test on those journalistic jollies if he dares to criticise anything.

The next few months should be interesting as the Bosch-system bikes come on stream, early indications suggesting it should provide some real competition to Panasonic and Yamaha. Wisper's new offerings are interesting as are the Bionx machines from 50 Cycles. It would be nice to think the extra competition might lead to keener pricing from the premium bike sellers but I shan't hold my breath on that one.

I hope the new publication survives and thrives but only if it tells it like it really is and isn't in the pocket of the major players in the ebike market.

Hi Indalo,

I don't think any publication, online or hardcopy, is able to give a totally impartial or unbiased review.
Every individiual reviewer, professional or ametuer has there own preferences, likes and dislikes, so it is quite difficult to be totally impartial and dispassionate.
In my opinion the best reveiws come from one or two exceptional people on this very forum.

Having said that, the more electric bike publications out there the better.

With the exception of the Innergy Gazelle, I have either owned or had extended test rides on all of the machines reviewed by Peter Eland of Electric Bike Magazine. Mr. Eland reports those machines in exactly the same words as I would use. Two reviews in particular, the Wisper 906 Alpino and the Juicy Sport are very accurate, right down to the very last wart. Had I written those reviews myself, that is precisely how I would describe these two particular machines.

David Henshaw of AtoB also writes very honest descriptions of any machines reviewed. Mr Henshaw's reporting style is rather different, any design flaws or short-comings will be exposed, albeit dressed with a little sarcasm and innuendo.

From my own personal experiences, I would say the reviews by Messrs Henshaw and Eland are un-biased and impartial, there never being any attempt to mislead or misinform prospective purchasers. Should we expect anything less from an independent reviewer.

Yes, I'd rather trust their opinion than those on an internet forum TBH! ( mine included :D ) where there is a natural tendency to recommend ones own likes and choice which can hardly be independent...

This is published by VeloVision, the alternative cycling magazine, and Peter Eland, the editor, is a very experienced cyclist who doesn't seem to shrink from criticism of products. He is a fan of hub gears and reviews every type that appears, but faithfully reports on all the failings and failures on the ones he tries long term. He also publishes any critical letters, one I remember from a cycle courier reporting going through hub gears one every six months! Oddly enough the courier wasn't complaining of the short life though, it was the lack of spares he bemoaned.

Peter does lack electric bike experience though, and the earlier reviews that first appeared in VeloVision were carried out by various readers/acquaintances. That didn't prevent plain speaking though, I remember the Sparta motor described as only able to pull itself up a hill, leaving the rider with as much to do as if riding an unpowered bike. Since the reviewer in that instance was a clergyman, hopefully honesty prevailed.
