  1. I have an 11 speed Kalkhoff and although it is not 500w it can go faster than I feel any need to. My cadence is similar to yours. I do like to keep the speed of the motor up and try to use the gears as much as possible though the motor is so good it is easy to be lazy. I also have a BBS01 on the wife's trike and I'm looking to upgrade that from a 3 speed to a 5 or even 8 speed to make it easier to pedal up steep gradients. Where did you get buy the cable for programming or did you make one?
  2. Is Raleigh made by the same firm that make KAlkhoffs?? The Kudos kit is very good, I have tried a lot of their bikes and they are all good, as is my Kalkhoff.
  3. [quote="David Stanbridge. It should make a big difference when trying to pull away with this beast of a trike. Can you post a picture of the Trike? I have converted a Pashley Picador Trike using a Bafang crank drive motor and it is great, my wife loves it. I tried clicking a link you posted and it showed a trike with the two wheels at the front which is much preferable to the two at the rear. I'm very interested to hear your feedback on your upgrade and how the Trike handles. Ta.
  4. I recently had an issue with a charger BMS were going to send me a new one but I managed to repair it easily so I cancelled the replacement. I would use them again but as always would check out UK suppliers first as they are improving their prices and customer service.
  5. Very Unfortunate. I have bought from china and had no problem. If you did not know the supplier had mislabelled to save costs and had no collusion with them to try to save money, then the supplier should recompense you. I'd be trying very hard to get redress. Good Luck
  6. Yep, all charged up and ready to roll. I think when it arced when I was testing that the dry joint that had come unsoldered probably re-attached itself. If I have any more problems with it I will pull it apart and re-solder all the power connections e.g. caps and transistors. Ta,
  7. Great news, I made a 3 x 12v lamp in series load to test the battery and charger. The Battery was fine, voltage 35.6. Then I checked the output voltage from the charger, it was 91V I then connected up my 36v load and it worked fine until it blow the first lamp in the series. So I shorted out the feed to the first lamp to the second only I did it to the output side not the input and there was a small arc and then the charger fan burst into life and the red light came on. I checked the output voltage from the charger and it was 41.9V I connected the charger to the battery and it seems fine, the fan is working and both lights are now red. If I disconnect the charger the top light goes green. I checked the voltage on the battery and it has increased and is still increasing slowly. I will monitor the charging and see how we get on. I haven't a clue what's happened but at least it's charging for the time being
  8. Suga Wu from BMS has offered to send me a new charger for the cost of shipping $33.00 which I thought was very reasonable. My only worry is that it may be the battery management board that has blown not the charger. I checked the voltage from socket on the bottom of the battery and it was 2.7 volts :-( I didn't want to strip it down unless I had to but I might wire 3 12 volt bulbs in series and see what the charger does then. Of course it could be both the charger and the Battery management system have blown. Saying that I don't know how "clever" the battery protection system is. Has anyone opened the case on one of these batteries? I'm loathe to open it too soon just in case I need to return it to BMS. Edit at 16:24 the battery is at 35.5 volts, I turned the switch on :-) More Haste! Ta,
  9. My Grandkids call their Great Grandmother Nana Colin, now she is happy to be called Colin. It takes all sorts :-) Though the point that selling one form of transport that can break the law is not a problem, but selling a bicycle that "Could" break the law is a problem, then it seems a little overkill to me. My POV is sell the bike as long as it meets the law WRT safety and if the owner speeds or drives dangerously then they have to pay the price in Law. Bullets don't kill people it's the person who aims and fires the gun. I don't advocate an American style of gun law but I don't see any reason why the whole should suffer for the actions of a few. Ta,
  10. Thanks for the advice, strange you don't get arcing, from what I've read previously it seems a common theme, the last flash I had was a big one. I'll keep looking and see if I can get a better PSU by either modding an existing one or buying a "better one". I didn't want to dive in and start stripping the existing charger until I hear back from BMS. Ta,
  11. I bought the above from BMS with a BBS01 kit. It all went together like a dream. I have charged the battery about 6 or 7 times now. I always plug the charger in, switch on the mains, connect to the battery (always indoors) and as usual I get a flash as the connector arcs. It is very annoying, however today the top light didn't come on and the fan didn't run :-( I have emailed BMS however I don't hold any great hopes as they are in China. So, has anyone had experience of the EMC-180? It is the 36V 4A, I could use a wiring diagram if anyone knows where there is one. I am qualified in electronics (C&G 224 Power & Control) so have a scope and the usual tools, it is a lot easier if I have a diagram though. The charger gets hot very quickly and the output is 90v when I test it with a multimeter so it looks like it's the cooling circuit/fan that has gone. I got the Kalkhoff charger out thinking that I'd see what that put out with a view to rigging something up to charge this battery and the three connectors show only one +ve connector two -ve connectors and only 5V showing on the multimeter so probably not a good idea to try and use that :-( If anyone has any good ideas about what I can use in the mean time I'd be grateful :-) Thanks,
  12. Well the cable arrived yesterday, I fitted it today and it works like a dream. Many thanks for all the suggestions. It cost $8.50 including postage so very cheap compared to BMS and others who wanted to charge $30 postage.
  13. VMT for that Shemozzle999, I'm on the case now "Edit" I've ordered it :-) We'll see how long it takes to get the part! Ta.
  14. :-( At least someone else is up at this hour :-)
  15. Mine does make a clicking noise occasionally. I wasn't sure if it was the pedal, then the noise stopped when cycling in Isle d' Rey. Recently the noise returned intermittently :-( A bit of a worry, if 50 cycles know what is causing the issue I hope they will advise customers of the steps needed to resolve it. I'm still Very Happy with the bike. I don't mind replacing parts if they wear, I just hope it is just simple replacement of parts that have worn, preferably with an improved part :-)
  16. Hi Trex, did these ever arrive? If not I can extend the cable however I'd rather use an extension cable rather than cut and splice. Ta,
  17. The BBS01 is a centre bracket (Crank drive) replacement. It is very easy to fit (don't forget the extension lead for the speed sensor if twin rear wheel) and it works great. As it drives the rear wheel there is no slip, on my wife's I do lift the wheel when cornering and for fun I ride it on two wheels, keeping the driven one on the deck. The wife and grandkids all love it. When we were in France on the Ile de Ré recently the number of people asking "where we rented" the trike was amazing, I'm surprised there is not more of a market for adult trikes. I would go for one with the two wheels at the front and a single rear wheel as I think they are safer, a' la Morgan. If you are near the channel tunnel give me a call, you can have a go on ours
  18. I fitted a Bafang BBS01 to a Pashley Trike and it is Great. It is the larger frame and works really well. I looked at doing a Front hub however that would mean losing the roller brake and as there are no rear brakes I decided against that. If you are making a multi seater then braking will be the issue, when turning on a 3 wheeler if you have a single wheel at the front, then you have to be very careful about getting the speed down as they can tip easily if you try to turn to quickly at speed. Good Luck,
  19. I bought my BBS01 and 17Ah Panasonic battery for the trike and although I did have to pay $20 extra for the shipping and £80 import duty (which I expected anyway) I was very pleased at the speed it all worked. I received it in under a fortnight and it has performed perfectly since fitting. I have no complaints with BMS apart from they are too far away to ship small parts/orders at a reasonable cost.
  20. I'm interested how you are going to mount the wheel, is it a single rear wheel? Ta,
  21. I fitted a BBS01 to the wifes Pashley Trike, it is a fun ride. I looked at doing a rear wheel drive however I couldn't see how to fit a driven wheel to the Pashley without fitting dropouts hence the BBSO1. If you are near the channel tunnel then drop me a line and you can have a ride if you're interested.
  22. I have two friends, they have Pedelecs that are a few years old, their bikes in comparison to the Kalkhof are very heavy. The battery is nearly twice the length of mine and double the weight. It just shows how things are improving and my advice to anyone who is unsure is to get out and try a few from the suppliers. KUDOS are a great team if you are anywhere near them. They will give you a test ride and are not pushy and a myriad of options, as I'm sure will 50 Cycles.
  23. I have a Kalkhoff from 50 Cycles and it IS NOT like riding a boris bike when I don't have the battery turned on. When I ride, most of the time I don't have it turned on, downhill and on the flat I don't need the assist, it is only if it is a strong headwind or I'm going uphill I turn the assist on. People should try these bikes before they decide. If you are in South East Kent and want to try mine, you are welcome! Everyone who has tried my bike is amazed at the power and ease with which it rides with and without the power. I have, since buying my bike converted a Pashley Trike with a Bafung BBS01 250 and it is such fun, the grandchildren are always on it when we stop when out on a ride and the youngest (6) was getting tired cycling into the wind and rain the other day so I put her on the basket over the rear wheels and I carried her bike and we cycled back to the van, she loved it :-)
  24. I'm after a Bafang BBS Central Motor Speed Sensor Extend Wire. Length: 400mm I have built the Trike and forgot to order the extension cable at the same time. the cost including shipping is $23.42 USD about £15 which, being a Yorkshire Lad, I baulked at. So if anyone has one or knows where I can buy one without paying exorbitant postage I would be grateful. Or if anyone is buying a few parts and wants to order one for me I don't mind putting towards the postage. I live in Kent near the Channel Tunnel though I do travel around quite a lot so may be able to collect. Many thanks,
