  1. Gave up on this idea long, long ago and bought a proper E-MTB! Didn't fancy trying to cope with the stresses and strains (on me or the bike!)
  2. I finally got in there. Was hard work getting the miranda lockring off though. Ended up buying a 1/2 inch ratchet handle to fit into the new spider tool too. Had to put bike on floor and lean heavily to get spider to engage and provide enough static traction to stop the wheel spinning.Once the ring was loosened it was easy. Was amazed how much crap is inside there already though. Was loads of build up of crud on 15t sprocket that I cleaned off. Applied silicon grease around some entrance points to help keep crap out. Hardest thing with fitting new motor cover was getting the internal metal plates and screws fixed back in place. The small metal plates are really soft metal too - the screw thread on one completely stripped and that was with minimal tightening. I've now had to replace one of the 6 small bolts with a nut & bolt right through the plastic shell and metal plate instead. The new cover has an extra hole for securing at about 11 O'Clock relative to sprocket looking from side. The hole for this is already in place but the original cover didn't have the extra hole. Arguably I could have just made a hole in the original cover and screwed a new 6mm bolt in rather than replace the whole lot as this would have pulled the cover in by a mm or two. The profile of the new cover doesn't seem that different. Crucially, the chain is now clear of the cover by 1-2mm and no longer scrapes on it.
  3. Yeah I just found one in stock at Singletrackbikes for about £19 delivered so grabbed that as the eBay one is out of stock now. Apparently the black shield/lockring combo is known as a "Miranda Lockring" for reference.
  4. Just to say - the particular link above is 100% NOT the tool you need with a Bosch CX on a cube bike. It is entirely the wrong approach. You need the more traditional spider that can engage with the sprocket holes. The Bosch/Cube (and maybe other bikes?) combination has a black shield around the sprocket that stops the spanner-like "ebikespider" being able to work - there simply is no room for it to fit on.
  5. Yup. Straightforward warranty replacement from shop. Cube knew about it as soon as I emailed them about it. It has another screw point kind of just above 12 noon on the sprocket where the original has none. Not sure if that will help to hold it in place. Will update this thread when I do it.   6. This cleaning/greasing thing that people seem to be doing. Firstly I'm concerned that this should be necessary on the bike - surely it's reasonable to expect a long travel dual suspension mtb to be used off-road in muddy/wet conditions? If so, then the cover and configuration *should* be robust enough to deal with it. I'm also worried that if there is a failure and there's then a warranty claim that they *might* start to protest that whatever I've been doing with grease/etc has actually caused the problem... Is there any need for ventilation in the motor or should we be investigating sealing tape to block the gaps?
  7. There's a rabbit hole I didn't want to go down then! Half an hour later having been reading up on all reliability problems of Bosch motors and I'm beginning to get nervous. Time to get out and hammer the miles onto the bike to see if it's an early-failer or not. Sheesh.
  8. Hi there. I have a 2017 Cube with the CX drive fitted. Had a warranty replacement on the motor cover from Bosch (chain is rubbing on original one). I need a tool to get the drive sprocket off so I can replace it. Is it this one I need?: https://www.e-bikeshop.co.uk/bosch-spider-lock-ring-tool-active-performance or is that for the previous model? Is it likely I'll need repeated access behind that cover? e.g. is it worth me buying this tool or should I be looking for a loan from somewhere do you think?

For those looking in here who may be in the same boat I was a month or so back (i.e. "what will an e-mtb do for me and what will it be capable of with regard to steep slopes, etc.") I can report that I am amazed by its performance. I have the Cube Stereo Hybrid 160 HPA Race (it received its first compliment on the trails yesterday - I heard someone say to his mate, "that's a nice looking bike..." as I went past) with the 500kWh battery. So far have only used it at Cannock as we are yet to venture further afield. I'm 100kg and not the fittest. I could just about get up the steep climbs at Cannock with my old bike but not with any speed and I would be exhausted and close to vomiting for a few minutes afterwards. So far I've managed all of the climbs there in Eco mode with the very occasional switch into tour mode on steeper sections (20-30 metres at most, then back into Eco). Yesterday I was getting to the top of hills after cycling up at 7-8mph in eco mode and was only breathing a bit hard at the top. Let me reiterate; I am old, heavy and not fit. This bike is simply transformational. My serious mountainbiking mate doesn't like Cannock as it is "constant pedalling" - he thinks there are very few sections where you can have proper downhill, etc (he's wrong, there are many sections but it's not as distinct with its uphills and downhills as other trail centres like Llandegla and Coed-y-Brenin). This thing breezes around without breaking sweat in Eco mode and without killing me. If I get really lazy and stick it in sports or turbo mode it is simply ridiculous and goes uphill with the slightest of effort. One full loop of Cannock (15 miles or so) used less than half a battery for me. Will be interesting to see how much the drag up out of the car park at Llandegla will affect it! In short - if you're thinking about it - just do it. I've yet to receive any abuse from anyone for "cheating" but I'm not a dick to people I pass going uphill so that probably helps.

  11. 22" Cube. Largest they do. The (replacement) dropper post is further in than the one supplied with the bike. Cubes are notorious for being short and tall, but ironically the bike is longer than my previous one.
  12. New owner checking in. Cube HPA Race 160 which has just had its first proper outing at Cannock (lots of other e-bikes around). The difference from my "normal" bike is phenomenal. Usually I am hundreds of metres back from my mates with them having to wait whilst I cough up a lung or two, almost puke and recover. In eco mode 95% of the time (occasional push into tour mode on steeper bits) I was able to stay directly on the tail of the fastest climber. Battery range was a weird one. The range available started at 56 miles with full battery. After doing the full figure of 8 loop (15 miles or so?) the range remaining was reading 10 miles, but the battery had only just dropped from 4 out of 5 bars to 3 out of 5 bars... so surely I had much more than 10 miles left? Seems I'll have to get some experience of using this and see what I learn. If, like me, you're getting on a bit and aren't as fit as you used to be, but you like the downhills and being out with your mates then I can heartily recommend an e-MTB. It is transformational. PS.
